His ancestors were early pioneers to Texas in the early 1840's. In those days Texas' unspoiled beauty, untraveled terrain, rugged bluffs and creeks dominated. James was inspired by their stories and chose Texas's rugged landscape as his primary subject matter. An intimate knowledge of Texas and the many facets of the western landscape are obvious when one views a painting created by the artist. Born in Houston in 1944, James always knew he would be an artist. He was committed to his education and earned a BFA. He studied both commercial and fine art as a free-lance designer and illustrator, polishing his painting skills on the side. It was at this stage in his career that his dad, J.C. literally absconded with one of his paintings and marched into a local gallery to show what his son could do. From that day on, he dedicated his life to fine art and has enjoyed a most remarkable career. James has always been influenced by such artists as Frank Tenney Johnson, James Reynolds, Howard Terpning, John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla. He seeks to evoke these qualities in his own work and establish his own niche in western art by unique combinations of light, color and action to leave a lasting impact on the viewer. James won numerous awards including "Artist's Choice" in 2010 and "Best Group" in 2007 with a cash award of $5000 from the Briscoe Museum's Night of Artist's show in San Antonio, Texas. Another honor was "Olaf Wieghorst Award" for the best painting at the 2007 Mountain Oyster Show in Tucson, Arizona.

Farm Mural Study
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This painting is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Farm Mural Study, c. 1940, oil on Masonite, signed lower right, 15 x 42 inches; presented in a newer wood frame About the Painting A delightful regionalist composition, Cecil Head’s Farm Mural Study features a tidy and verdant farmscape where the animals outnumber the farmer and remind the viewer of an idealized fecundity of the American Midwest. Head gained early recognition for his mural designs in 1934 when his work was selected to represent Indiana in a Public Works of Art Project exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Head excelled at rural Indiana scenes and the present work bears comparison to his most famous painting, Potato Planters, a 1936 work, which won first prize at the Hoosier Salon and was exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in 1941. Both works feature hard-working farmers in straw hats standing against the back drop of farm buildings. A critic's commentary about Potato Planters also applies to Farm Mural Study, "the various farm objects...

Landscape with Cows
By Ruth Armer
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Landscape with Cows, c. 1930s, oil on canvas, 30 x 24 inches, signed lower middle About the Painting Landscape with Cows is a fine example of California Scene painting, the West Coast version of the American Scene genre practiced during the 1930s and 1940s by the likes of Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry. Armer stands out as one of the rare female oil painters working in this style in California, as most of her contemporaries were men whose fame largely depended on watercolor as a medium. Like many Regionalist painters, Armer heeded the call to paint the local scene during the 1930s and even in the depths of the Great Depression, she captured the natural beauty and abundance of the California ranch lands. For many migrants from the Dust Bowl and the southern parts of the United States, California was a golden land of opportunity. In Landscape with Cows, Armer plays on this theme by portraying the fields and distant foothills in a variety of golden hues. This work is a celebration of California’s unique geography, and it fits nicely into the grand tradition of American landscape painting. Armer’s spare treatment of the distant hills and buildings presages the abstract forms she later began to explore in earnest. Like many other artists working during the 1930s, Armer moved strongly towards abstraction by the 1940s, making her critically celebrated California Scene landscapes rare. Chestnut Racehorse with a Jockey Up On a Training Strap
By Henry H. Cross
Located in New York, NY
It was Henry Cross's portraits of horses belonging to the prominent breeders and trainers of the second half of the nineteenth century that won the artist renown as an animal painter. Born and raised in upstate New York, Cross's proficiency in both drafting and caricature was revealed while he was still a student at the Binghamton Academy, New York. In 1852, when he was only fifteen years old, Cross joined a traveling circus that took him to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and to the first of many Indian encampments that he would draw upon for subject matter throughout his career. Biographers differ as to the year Cross left for Europe, however, he was in Paris from 1852 to 1853 or 1854, where he studied with Rosa Bonheur, a highly esteemed French painter of horses. Upon Cross's return to the United States he was commissioned to paint the studs of wealthy horsemen, including those of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, Robert Bonner, the owner-publisher of The New York Ledger, and "Copper King" Marcus Daly, whose 18,000 acre stock farm was reputed to be the greatest and most valuable horse ranch in the world. Although Cross received the highest pay of any equine artist of his day (up to $35,000. for one order, according to The Horse Review of April 10, 1918, p. 328), he frequently joined traveling circuses and painted the locales where they visited. He also painted portraits of notable contemporaries, such as President Abraham Lincoln, ex-president Ulysses S. Grant, King Edward VII of England, W. F. "Buffalo Bill...
