Leon Herbo Art
Belgian, 1850-1907
Herbo Léon, born on October 8, 1850, in Templeuve, was a renowned Belgian painter celebrated for his captivating portraits of women in relaxed settings, as well as his skillful renderings of actors and actresses. His artistry extended to genre scenes, often infused with Orientalist themes, and his wife frequently served as his muse.
His artistic journey began at the Académie des beaux-arts de Tournai under the guidance of Léonce Legendre, the Director of the Academy. Subsequently, he further honed his skills at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1869 to 1874, achieving the top ranking in the preparatory competition for the Prix de Rome. Following extensive travels through Germany, Italy, and France, he eventually settled in Brussels.
In 1875, Léon Herbo marked his formal debut at the Salon van Brussel, continuing to showcase his work there until the close of the century. In 1876, he co-founded “L’Essor,” a progressive group challenging the conservative norms of the Academies.
His exhibitions extended beyond Belgium, encompassing showings in Paris, at the Salon, as well as in Munich and Berlin. His notable achievements include an honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. During the same year, he collaborated with the animal painter Alexandre Clarys on a monumental canvas depicting Queen Marie Henriette’s encounter with the military squadron named after her.
Known for his prolific output, Herbo crafted numerous works for commercial purposes, designed for reproduction through chromolithography or porcelain decoration. Notably, he gained acclaim as a portrait painter, offering fixed-price portraits with a guaranteed likeness. His reputation was such that he was often sought for posthumous portraits. A striking example is the portrait of the late Crown Prince of Belgium, Léopold Ferdinand, Count of Hainaut, commissioned by Queen Marie-Henriette.
Léon Herbo passed away on June 19, 1907, in Ixelle. While the majority of his paintings reside in private collections, some are on display at prestigious institutions such as the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, the Museum of Painting and Sculpture in Kortrijk, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts Tournai.(Biography provided by Valentina Safarian Fine Art)

Male and female portrait, both in silk kimono, possibly textile dealers
By Christoffel Lubieniecki
Located in Amsterdam, NL
CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729)
Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680)
Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand
Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each
Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki)
Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

Ibiza woman Spain spanish oil on canvas painting portrait
By Mariano Tur de Montis
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Frame size 83x73 cm.
Mariano Tur de Montis (Ibiza 1904 -1994). Son of the Ibizan general Don Juan Tur y Palau, of an old patrician family on the island, and of Doña Cristina de Montis and von der Klee. Ibiza painter who felt great admiration for the Spanish classics and the influence of Central European painting of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, and especially that of the painter Manuel Benedito.
He received multiple praises in his various artistic exhibitions not only in Ibiza, but also in Palma de Mallorca, Mahón, Barcelona, Madrid and in European capitals such as London or Paris.
When he was only fifteen, he decided to go to meet Sorolla - when he was painting "The Smugglers" in the vicinity of his family mansion - to find out what opinion he deserved on the first portrait he had made of his mother. A few years later, and undoubtedly encouraged by the praiseworthy response received, he was already successfully overcoming the successive sieves of artistic criticism, until he stood out with the “subtle and aristocratic” style that characterized him, in such relevant competitions as the National Exhibition de Bellas Artes or at the Paris Salon.
Delving into his biography it is possible to recognize the main factors that would converge in this rapid and justified progression: the very cultural and artistic environment that surrounded him since his birth. The specific preparation with which his refined mother channeled his innate qualities and marked sensitivity. As well as, and above all, his own need to create beauty. Despite a brilliant degree in Law, he attended the Sant Jordi Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona, complementing his training in Rome, Florence and Paris.
At the early date of 1925, the local press was pleased to transcribe the reviews of his exhibition in the Galerías Layetanas of Barcelona, and in which the acquisition of one of his works "Frivolities" for the Museum of Art took place. Modern of Palermo (Sicily).
After participating in 1926 in the Autumn Salon of Palma de Mallorca, together with Narcís Puget Viñas, and in 1929 in the Permanent Exhibition of Levante Art, one of his emblematic satisfactions would arrive: the praises that King Alfonso XIII himself dedicated to the stop before his painting Céfora, a painting in which his sister Guadalupe Tur de Montis was the model, during the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, held in Madrid. Oil that also deserved attention in the prestigious magazine La Esfera, which dedicated the cover of its number 20 of July 5, 1930, or the French magazine La Revue Moderne. In the magazine Arte y Hogar- in its number 56, the Marqués de Lozoya Director General of Fine Arts wrote a nice eulogy of the painter and his work in the photographic report dedicated to the beautiful and elegant Casa de los Tur de Ibiza.
It was precisely in 1930, when Tur de Montis began to interact amicably and professionally, with a select group of painters, both Spanish (Pla, Rigoberto Soler, Amadeo Roca and Laureano Barrau...
