Nicolaes Berchem Art
Dutch, 1620-1683
Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem (Haarlem, 1 October 1620 - Amsterdam, 16 February 1683) was a Dutch painter, specializing in pastoral scenes populated by mythological characters or biblical figures.
He was born in Haarlem, the son of the still life painter Pieter Claesz, who introduced him to the artistic world and taught him the first rudiments of painting. The surname Berchem, on the other hand, derived from the father's place of birth. He deepened his knowledge of him, according to the reconstruction of various art historians, under the guidance of Jan van Goyen, Jan Wils and Claes Cornelisz Moeyaert.
According to many sources, Berchem traveled to Italy in a period prior to 1642, together with the Dutch painter Hendrick Mommers and Jan Baptist Weenix, who was a cousin and the same age as him and with whom he also shared the experience in the Moeyaert's workshop.
In fact, around 1642, his presence in the guild of San Luca in Haarlem is documented.
The influence of Moeyaert was evident above all in the early years, as is attested by the Laban of 1643.
On 2 October 1646 he married Jan Wils' daughter, Catrijne Claesdr. De Groot. Around 1650 he moved to Westphalia together with Jacob van Ruisdael, and, after a second stay in Italy (1653-1656), he returned to his homeland, to Amsterdam where he worked on behalf of Jan de Visscher.
In the middle period of his career his vast production was mostly centered on port panoramas, hunts, ruins in Latin and Roman landscapes, battles and of course pastoral landscapes.
In the mature period, in addition to favoring more showy colors, he approached Adriaen van de Velde.
His artistic production was remarkable, given that his works amounted to 850 pieces, including about sixty etchings and numerous important sanguine drawings.
His Italian-style landscapes of ideal rural, hilly and mountain environments were embellished with human and animal figures partially inspired by the works of other artists, such as Allaert van Everdingen, Jan Hackaert, Gerrit Dou, Meindert Hobbema and Willem Schellinks.
Berchem exerted a strong influence on subsequent generations of Dutch painters and various French Rococo painters, such as Jean-Baptiste Pillement and Jean-Baptiste Oudry. Furthermore, his landscape artistic lines will inspire a good number of artists, such as François Boucher, Jean Pillement, Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and among the English Thomas Gainsborough.
His studies on animals were also of some importance.
He died in Amsterdam in 1683.(Biography provided by Antichita Castelbarco)

Sanguine drawing "Shepherdess on a Donkey" by Nicolaes Berchem
By Nicolaes Berchem
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Provenance: Mercedes von Dietrichtein, Buenos Aires. Alexander von Dietrichstein. By descendants Morritz von Diestrichstein.
Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem (1 October 1620 – 18 February 1683) was a highly esteemed and prolific Dutch Golden Age painter of pastoral landscapes, populated with mythological or biblical figures, but also of a number of allegories and genre pieces.
He was a member of the second generation of "Dutch Italianate landscape" painters. These were artists who travelled to Italy, or aspired to, in order to soak up the romanticism of the country, bringing home sketchbooks full of drawings of classical ruins and pastoral imagery. His paintings, of which he produced an immense number, (Hofstede de Groot claimed around 850, although many are misattributed), were in great demand, as were his 80 etchings and 500 drawings. His landscapes, painted in the Italian style of idealized rural scenes, with hills, mountains, cliffs and trees in a golden dawn...

'An Organization of Birds' by Louise Laplante in 2022
chalk on vintage collaged cranberry cultivation manual pages
48 x 41 inches unframed, 52 x 45 inches in natural wood frame with non-glare plexi
Louise Laplante bridges the past and present with mixed media drawings made with figurative charcoal silhouettes juxtaposed on collaged sheets of vintage paper. Finding beauty in forgotten or discarded sheets of ephemera, Laplante uses it as a guide for playful compositions of stenciled birds in mid-flight, drifting feathers, or taxidermized deer heads in rich pastel. A final burst of wistful linework glides over the pastel forms, accentuating her subject’s movement while adding another layer of texture. In this particular work, the artist cleverly draws an organized formation of birds over an almanac of vintage pages of numerical data. A departure from her typical greyscale palette, the artist introduces retro shades of brick red, forest green, cadet blue, and mustard yellow. The vivid silhouettes of flying birds flutter in place and provide colorful contrast against a background of vintage papers. In certain segments the stenciled images are delicately brushed over with a thin wisp of chalk which adds a delicate textured effect to the drawing. The figurative chalk drawing is framed with a light wood frame and has non-glare plexi.
About the artist:
Interested in blending the old world with the new, mixed media artist Louise Laplante combines her original images with ephemera of the past, enticing a conversation about it’s “relevancy to the present.” Her compositions begin with vintage book pages, personal handwritten letters, sheet music, or instruction from old guides on etiquette or science. While the text itself is weighted with reference to a particular subject, the visual of the typed or handwritten words and printed illustrations establish a unique pattern. These layered backgrounds are superimposed with opaque charcoal drawings that are inspired by the themes read between the lines. Most recently, the artist has opted for larger scale work, combining multiple sheets of vintage paper to expand her unique motifs. Laplante exhibits across the Northeast and has shown with Carrie Haddad for more than ten years.
Artist Statement:
My work connects the texts, and ideas, in the vintage book, music or correspondence pages, with images those words evoke to comment on how the past still resonates, whether we are aware of it or not.
It is informed by my love for old paper, letters, books and images, both as reminders of the past and as bits of pattern, tone, line and shape. The text on them acts as both content and visual device. With each work, I select, arrange and collage these pieces creating both a support and pattern building on it with motifs that are suggested by words on the papers. Although I often start with an agenda I always allow each work to build its own image.
