Robert Farber Black and White Photography

American, b. 1944

Over the course of his career, photographer Robert Farber has influenced countless photo artists. Owing to what were initially mistakes he made that yielded a soft-focus look and grainy textures in his images, Farber developed a painterly style of photography that draws on Impressionist and Surrealist art and sees him positioning subjects in warm, naturally lit interiors and amid unlikely landscapes.

Farber was born in Newark, New Jersey. From an early age, he explored his interest in art, encouraged by his mother who allowed him to turn their basement into an art studio. There he practiced drawing, as well as painting with watercolors and oil paints.

Farber studied marketing and business at the University of Miami, but always wanted to work in the arts. In 1970, he moved to New York City and began his journey into photography.

Farber brought his work to outdoor art festivals all over the city. At one of these festivals, an advertising executive saw one of his works and asked him to photograph for a Cotton Inc. advertisement. This led to more jobs, working for other big-name clients — such as Macy's, 20th Century Fox and Revlon, and major publications like Esquire and Playboy.

Farber has garnered lots of recognition throughout his career, including “Photographer of the Year” from the Photographic Manufacturers Association and an ASP International Award from the American Society of Photographers.

Farber annually contributes exclusive prints of his "Women as Art" series to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. His “Deterioration Series” continues to be exhibited around the world, including at galleries in Paris, Brussels and Florence.

Aviator, Southampton, NY 2012
Located in Hudson, NY
Price for UNFRAMED The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018 Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.” Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series. black and white, photography, women, woman, portrait, feminist, aviation, aviator, fashion Southampton...

Vintage Silver Gelatin Photograph Tipper Gore, Democratic Fundraiser 1992 Photo
By Fred McDarrah
Located in Surfside, FL
Tipper Gore at Democratic Fund Raiser 10/1/1992 Photographer is Fred McDarrah Over a 50-year span, McDarrah documented the rise of the Beat Generation, the city’s postmodern art movement, it's off-off-Broadway actors, troubadours, politicians, agitators and social protests. Fred captured Jack Kerouac frolicking with women at a New Year’s bash in 1958, Andy Warhol adjusting a movie-camera lens in his silver-covered factory, and Bob Dylan offering a salute of recognition outside Sheridan Square near the Voice’s old office. Not just a social chronicler, McDarrah was a great photo-journalist. For years, McDarrah was the Voice's only photographer and, for decades, he ran the Voice’s photo department, where he helped train dozens of young photographers, including James Hamilton, Sylvia Plachy, Robin Holland and Marc Asnin. His mailbox was simply marked "McPhoto." An exhibit of McDarrah’s photos of artists presented by the Steven Kasher Gallery in Chelsea was hailed by The New York Times as “a visual encyclopedia of the era’s cultural scene.” artists in their studios, (Alice Neel, Philip Guston, Stuart Davis, Robert Smithson, Jasper Johns, Franz Kline), actors (Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro on the set of “Taxi Driver”), musicians (Janis Joplin, Alice Cooper, Bob Dylan) and documentary images of early happenings and performances (Yayoi Kusama, Charlotte Moorman, Al Hansen, Jim Dine, Nam June Paik). The many images of Andy Warhol include the well-known one with his Brillo boxes at the Stable Gallery in 1964. Woody Allen, Diane Arbus, W. H. McDarrah’s prints have been collected in depth by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington. His work is in numerous public and private collections. Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore (née Aitcheson; born August 19, 1948) is an American social issues advocate who was the second lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. She is the estranged wife of Al Gore, the 45th vice president of the United States, from whom she separated in 2010. In 1985, Gore co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), which advocated for labeling of record covers of releases featuring profane language, especially in the heavy metal, punk and hip hop genres. Throughout her decades of public life, she has advocated for placing advisory labels on music (leading critics to call her a censor), mental health awareness, women's causes, children's causes, LGBT rights and reducing homelessness. Gore co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) with Susan Baker, wife of then–United States secretary of the treasury James Baker, because Gore heard her then 11-year-old daughter Karenna playing "Darling Nikki" by Prince. The group's goal was to increase parental and consumer awareness of music that contained explicit content through voluntary labeling albums with Parental Advisory stickers. According to an article by NPR, Gore went "before Congress to urge warning labels for records marketed to children. A number of individuals including Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Jello Biafra...
