Rolla Taylor Art

American, 1872-1970

Rolla Taylor was born in 1872. Taylor, originally from Galveston, Texas, started painting at the age of 14. Before arriving in San Antonio, Texas in 1889, the Taylor family spent several years in Houston and then traveled to Cuero, Texas by covered wagon. Taylor graduated from the Cuero Institute and later studied in San Antonio with Robert Jenkins Onderdonk, Jose Arpa and Theodore Gentilz. Later, he studied in France for 3 months with Arthur W. Best in San Francisco and Frederick Fursimman in Michigan. Taylor was a personal friend of the artist Julian Onderdonk. Taylor exhibited frequently for 60 years, including local, state and numerous national exhibitions throughout America. His first exhibit was in San Antonio in 1894, at which he won first prize of $500 and later sold the painting for another $500. He painted in the impressionist style, lively with color and flooded with sunlight, which represents Jose Arpa’s influence. His subjects were mostly old buildings, shacks, landscapes, San Antonio River scenes, missions of San Antonio, blooming cactus and scenes of old Mexico. During his earliest years, his subjects would be a pair of shoes, a cat, some books, Mexican jugs or anything in the home. Many of his local paintings are now of historic interest that recorded buildings that no longer exist. His memberships include American Federation of Arts; Chicago Society of Artists; Society of Independent Artists in New York; San Antonio Art League; Southern States Art League; River Art Group; Coppini Academy of Fine Arts and Leon Springs Art Colony.

Jules Elie Peonies by Katharine Rowe floral painting of peonies
By Katharine Rowe
Located in London, GB
Katharine spent a long time mixing paint to reach the right level of smokiness and avoid any saccharine pink in these peonies. They seem to be quite solid but at the same time quite delicate, they are a joy to paint. Katharine Rowe is an English painter she graduated in Fine Art and History of Art at the University of Edinburgh in 1999 and spent a year studying at Université de la Sorbonne, Paris. Having spent a decade working in advertising Katharine felt the increasing need to be out of the office and with her paintbrush. The past 9 years have been dedicated to just that. Katharine is strongly motivated by colour and she often spends up to an hour mixing and preparing paints before turning to the canvas. Katharine is always inspired by her surroundings from the varied landscapes of London...

White Peonies from Covent Garden

Located in London, GB
This was the flower artist Katherine Rowe had in her wedding bouquet and so they have always had a special place in my heart. Despite being 'white' there is hardly any actual pure white in the painting but multiple blues and yellows and greens. Pale Pink Peonies sit in a Celadon Jug floral painting by Jonquil Williamson
By Jonquil Williamson
Located in London, GB
British contemporary artist Jonquil Williamson is known for her vibrant still lifes and rich tonal landscapes. Although her work is mostly representational, she allows the mark-making and textures created as she layers the paint, to inform the image. Of her work she shares, “like many still life painters, I find inspiration from taking everyday things and elevating to something beautiful and positive. I strive to create an atmosphere with my works; from the calmness and serenity of Morandi-inspired clusters of pots and vessels...

Reveil Matin (Alarm Clock) by Kimura Chuta, Impressionism, New School of Paris
Located in PARIS, FR
Chuta KIMURA (also "Tchuta" or "Tshuta") is an allusive landscape painter and pastellist. His name - composed of the words Ki (tree) and Mura (village) - literally means "village tree". The artist was born into a middle-class family with an ancestral Samurai background. From the age of 13, he took drawing lessons at the Takamatsu School of Decorative Arts. In 1936, he went on to study at Tokyo's Nika Art Academy, where the academic teaching did not suit him. In 1937, he exhibited for the 1st time at the Dokuritsu Salon, but was immediately drafted by the army to serve in China - where, despite the war, he developed a passion for ancient calligraphy. In 1940, he eventually returned to Japan due to illness. Shortly afterwards, in 1941, he discovered a painting by Pierre Bonnard at the Ohara Art Museum in Kurashiki, the light of which overwhelmed him. He was mobilized again in China in 1945, then, once the war was over, he resumed his exhibitions in Tokyo and discovered Bonnard once again. In 1947, he married Satchiko Yunoki, with whom he decided to move to Paris. Thanks to a patron, the young couple settled in Montparnasse in March 1953 (taking over the former studio of his illustrious compatriot, Foujita). In 1954, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and met Jacques Zeitoun, artistic director of the "Art Vivant" gallery (Paris and Lyon), who immediately signed him up. From 1955 onwards, Kimura enjoyed a steady stream of solo exhibitions - in Paris (e.g. Galerie St Placide, Kriegel, or Art Yomiuri - the latter exhibiting his work 4 times at FIAC in the 1980s); Lyon (e.g. Galerie St Georges); Antibes (e.g. Galerie St Georges); and Paris. galerie St Georges); Antibes (ex. galerie René Raporte); Brussels (ex. galerie de France et du Benelux); Geneva (ex. galerie Krugier); Tokyo (ex. galleries Nichido, or Takarashi); and New York (ex. galleries David Findlay, or Ruth Sigel). The artist also participated in fairs and group exhibitions (e.g. Biennale de Paris in 1957, Centre Pompidou in 1979, The Phillips Collection in 1985). In 1962, he moved to Châtenay-Malabry and met Jean Grenier - professor of philosophy and holder of the chair of aesthetics and art science at the Sorbonne - who became his principal biographer: "When Kimura rightly prides himself on uniting East and West, which, he writes, are as different from each other as day and night are from each other, he might add that it is by remaining himself and drawing on the dual traditions of his country that he has succeeded in creating a work that is at once so violent and so gentle. In 1963, the French State bought a painting from him - "Jardin à Châtenay". In 1965, Galerie Kriegel (recently opened by his 1st dealer...
