Sara Conca Art

American
Sara Conca is a world renowned American contemporary abstract artist of French-Italian descent. Her work has been acquired by many collectors in Europe and the United States. Sara’s paintings can be found in private chateaus, hotel lobbies in France, hospitals and airports in Northern Florida, and exclusive celebrity homes and museums. By the age of 17, Sara was living and working in Paris. There, a life changing experience reinforced her need for movement, energy, and art. While in Paris, Sara studied sculpture at Ateliers D’Art De St Maur Des Fosses, and further continued her education in South Florida as an assistant of the critically lauded artist Purvis Young. Sara spent her last 18 years traveling extensively and living in Manhattan, solely supported via her painting sales. The energy of New York City gave her an insightful appreciation for ever changing environments and settings, and heavily influenced her painting style. Sara recently returned to her Florida roots, which has inspired her to create a fresh, new, mystical aquatic series involving natural mixed media such as raw silver dust and 18k gold leafing, raw color pigments, mica flakes, and natural crystals. “My work is intended to instantaneously immerse the viewer into the visual and emotional energies that I have devoted to each piece. Depending on one’s ability and willingness to be guided by the senses, these paintings can lead one away from the mind and into an alternate and self-made reality filled with color and freedom. My new series features blues. I love working with this color because it changes in the light by manipulating the textures and layering with silver dust or gold; thus affording each piece continuous movement and energy from the reflecting and refracting light.”

Oil, pastel, and paper collage on canvas. Signed and dated verso. 52.75 x 47.75 in. 54 x 49 in. (framed) Gilded floater frame. Provenance Compass Rose, Chicago Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings. From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League. Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. In 1953, the Tibor de Nagy...

Beauty Within You
By Sara Conca
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Abstract art is open to interpretation and gives us the freedom to explore the artwork and assign our own meaning to each piece. This intensely personal process enriches our experience viewing non-representational work and is one of the most beautiful aspects of the complex style. Such is the journey when viewing the paintings by American contemporary abstract artist Sara Conca. Her vibrant works celebrate light, movement, and healing, using layered natural materials and textures to create immersive and constantly renewing landscapes. "I want each piece to look like it’s alive, not only with paint and movement, but also with natural materials that the living earth provides", says the artist. Conca creates her signature, mixed media paintings in a distinctive process all her own - she paints in reverse, building the image from foreground to background in careful layers. This technique requires an intuitive and meditative approach, which she often attains by painting in plein-air along the peaceful riverbank of her rural home. Says Conca, "I make giving pieces – they create a connection between the viewer and the flow of the universe. Nature is a beautiful source for healing, and I draw on the organic beauty of my surroundings. My painting technique pushes these ideas even further. Traditionally, artists paint from back to front – creating their background, then middle ground, then foreground, controlling each step along the way. I paint in reverse on the back of a clear sheet of acrylic, so the first marks I put down are the foreground of the painting and there’s no way to take back any mistakes. Therefore, I just accept them. I can have an image in my mind that I want to create. And being both ambidextrous and dyslexic, it’s easier for me to think in reverse visually. Ultimately, I rely heavily on prayer and intuition so that my idea will come through and the right energies will jump in. By working in reverse, the artwork becomes pure and primal and has its own signature imprint." Conca’s art incorporates unconventional materials such as raw silver...
