Issey Miyake Black Pleated Sculptural Sleeveless Maxi Dress, 1990s

About the Item

Futuristic Japanese designer Issey Miyake is a master of form and fabric, known for creating beautiful sculptural garments that pay homage to the past while bringing us somewhere new and enchanting. Eschewing the traditional way of constructing garments from pre-pleated fabric, Miyake developed his own method of “garment pleating”, creating permanent pleats using a heat press after constructing a garment’s desired shape. This technique created remarkable clothes that maintain their shape, may be folded flat, and do not crease. From the Nineties, this beautiful dress is a fine example of Miyake’s interest in folding techniques and desire to create pleated garments that move. Done in black polyester, an ideal fabric for pleating, this dress is a sophisticated and innovative take on a timeless silhouette. The bodice is introduced with a round neckline framed by two slender straps, the open décolletage bringing a nice lightness to the midi-length gown. The micro pleated fabric offers a pleasing textural rhythm throughout while following the natural lines of the body, flowing from the bodice to an asymmetric hem that reveals the ankles at the front and finishes in a pointed fishtail at the back. Size: Small Measurements: Bust: 32 inches Waist: up to 30 Hips: 32-34 inches Length: 48 front 59 inches at the center back An exquisite attached overlay piece falls from a three-dimensional fold at the top of the bodice in the front, and a more subtle fold at the back. A slit in the center front panel of the overlay creates a tear shaped keyhole, offering a glimpse of the dress beneath. The overlay cocoons around the body, the asymmetric hem reaching the hips in a straight line at the front while finishing in a point at the back, mirroring the hem of the dress. The voluminous, wrap-around nature of this overlay emphasizes the hips and is visible from the front of the dress, creating an Avant Garde silhouette that is fascinating and feminine at once. The contrasting direction of the pleats on both the overlay and dress adds another layer of depth throughout, giving the eye something new to appreciate at each angle. A structural masterpiece, this sophisticated gown will draw attention whatever the occasion, and certainly is, as Miyake once said of his clothes, a tool for the “wearers creativity.” A similar version of this 1990’s Miyake dress with an integrated shawl is part of the LACMA’s permanent collection. Unlined, this sleeveless dress slips over the head for easy wear and has been professionally eco dry cleaned and pressed. High-quality vintage pieces like this are yours to live in and love while increasing in value every year. It’s never too soon to start collecting them, as an investment in your wardrobe—and in yourself.

  • Incredible Rare Issey Miyake Pleats Please Avant Garde Color Block Dress
    By Issey Miyake
    Located in Boca Raton, FL
Futuristic designer Issey Miyake has mastered the technique of creating sculptural works of art in cloth. His innovative pattern cutting and signature use of micro pleating give his garments a unique form. As one of the earliest designers to take on this style of fashion, Miyake is held in high regard as a pioneer of these creative, out-of-this-world fashions. From the Pleats Please line, this rare collector’s dress is done in a pleated fabric in shades of midnight blue, electric purple, red, magenta, cerulean, chartreuse, brown, sage, and neon green. The bright colors have a prismatic quality that makes the dress pop visually, giving the eye something new to appreciate from each angle while elevating this garment to a work of art. The dress begins with a high straight neckline and long sleeves that reach the wrists. The front of the dress is fitted throughout, creating an elegant sheath that falls to a maxi length several inches above the ankles. The body of the dress is done in midnight blue pleats with a section of purple at the bust and a section of neon green near the hem that draws the eye. Thigh-high slits at each side of the dress allow for greater ease of movement while introducing a welcome risqué element that helps balance the volume of material on display. Size: Small Measurements: Bust: 32 inches Waist: 30 inches Length: 50 inches An incredible panel at the back of the dress is made up of a vivid patchwork of color-blocked fabric, adding extra depth and gravitas to this Avant Garde masterpiece. The top of the panel can be folded over the front of the shoulders to create a curving, cocoon-like shawl, or folded together at the back like wings at rest. The panel spans the entire length of the dress and is slightly higher at the neck, adding volume and a delightful sculptural element to the otherwise columnar silhouette of the dress. An unforgettable addition to the discerning fashion lover’s wardrobe, this rare Issey Miyake Pleats Please dress is the perfect choice for a wedding, gala, or special occasion, and is sure to turn heads for many years to come. • Balenciaga Black Polka Dot Silk Mini Dress, 1990s
    By Balenciaga
    Located in Boca Raton, FL
Presented by newly appointed head designer Nicolas Ghesquière, the Fall/Winter 1997 runway captured the Balenciaga essence with a balance of edge and elegance incorporating tailored looks and feminine dresses with the added quirk of playful polka dot prints. Presumably from that collection, this Balenciaga mini dress spares no details. A black silk chiffon overlay accented by a black satin collar and multi-tiered ruffle detail at the hem provide an elaborate frame for the crème and black polka-dot silk crepe underdress. Adding to the boldness of this design are moderate size bishop sleeves with matching black satin cuffs. The vertical aspects and loose flow of this dress give off a 60s youthful aesthetic met with a goth Lolita edge. Size: 36 Size estimate: XS/S Shoulders: 15 inches Sleeves: 25 inches Bust: 34 inches Waist: 30 inches Hips: 32 inches Length: 33 inches At the centre back the dress fastens with an invisible zip while the overlay is closed with hand-set concealed snaps. The cuffs are finished with quarter-ball buttons that mimic the polka dot dress pattern...

This Nina Ricci kimono is an effortless way to layer on luxury. The diaphanous beauty is designed from light-as-air black silk featuring a devoré print of gorgeous swirling flowers, vines and leaves. Many of the flowers are dressed up with black metallic accents at their centers, but those glimmering touches aren’t what truly creates the drama in this couture piece. The stunning flowing sleeves do. They rest at the wrists and then cascade down, creating a sinuous arc with the ankle-length hem. Wear the topper open at the front or fasten it at the jewel neckline, which is finished with pretty gathers that help to elegantly frame the face. Size estimate: One size fits most Measurements: Bust: Up to 40 inches Waist: Up to 40 inches Hips: Up to 45 inches Length: 56 inches Sleeve length: 20 inches Sleeve width: 30 inches This Nina Ricci couture...
