Jean Patou stylised floral motifs brushed wool dress, circa 1960s

About the Item

Jean Patou’s talent and aesthetics like contemporaries such as Edward Molyneux, Lucien Lelong and others contributed to what is known as the “golden age of Haute Couture” which took place during the 1920s and 1930s. This dress is an extraordinary example of Patou’s connection of active wear to couture to create his own youthful interpretation of the long standing tradition. Indeed, this dress is inspired by the androgynous “garçonne or flapper” style that defined the look of the 1920s. Featuring a column-shape which is synonymous with the era for its less structured and loser style. The shape also highlights the house’s tradition of textile innovation, confident tailoring and restrained simplicity and elegance. Decorated with inverted pleats at the hem, which is suggestive of the fluid low-waisted skirt of the garçonne, that reveal the shape and movements of the legs. The dress, while without the ornamentation and embroidery of the gowns of the 1920s, is decorated with a stained-glass like print design that remains elaborate, rich and appears almost three dimensional. Fully lined with a silk-line material. Enclosure is with a metal zip from the scooped neckline to below the hip line. This look shows a moment in fashion when the decorative excess is transformed into simplicity and comfort, the very features that were also being offered by Patou’s competitor Coco Chanel
