The age of Sultan Su¨leyman the Magnificent Book by Esin Atil National Gallery of Art, 1987 - Art ottoman - Expositions - 356 pages This catalog accompanied the first comprehensive exhibition of Turkish art devoted to the most celebrated period of Ottoman history, the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. A brilliant jurist, Süleyman was also a discerning collector, a significant patron, and an accomplished poet. He, as well as his wife, daughter, sons, and court officials, commissioned many architectural monuments and literary and historical texts. The sophisticated patronage of Süleyman and his court nurtured the high standards and creativity that came to typify Ottoman art of the 16th century. The Age of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, with more than 200 judiciously chosen works of art, includes manuscripts (with examples of Süleyman’s own poetry) as well as jeweled vessels, silks, painted ceramics, and other sumptuous objects created in the imperial studios under the guidelines established by the sultan. Suleyman, who doubled the size of the Ottoman Empire during his reign, was a contemporary of Elizabeth I and Martin Luther. A strong patron of the arts, he maintained imperial studios where decorative themes invented for manuscript illumination were extended to pottery, tiles, woven silks, carpets and jewelry. This was an age when calligraphy was practiced by kings as well as copyists, and when ceramics as fine as the best Ming pottery poured forth from Turkish kilns. A touring exhibition focuses on works on loan from the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul; among the rewards of this handsomely illustrated catalogue are drawings of fantastic flying creatures, realistic scenes of natural beauty, daily articles such as embroidered handkerchiefs...

Early 19th century antique Islamic Ottoman Empire metallic threads embroidered silk textile. Antique Oriental Byzantine textile depicting embroidered flowers depicting branches filled-in with silk floss threads creating an intricate embroidered pattern. On two of the corners, the antique Moorish textile panel is embellished with bands of blue silk rushing framed by with antique metallic gold and silver embroidered, this dramatic embroidered of meandering botanical's and animals, horses, fishes, peacocks that are done in earthy colors and embroidered on natural backed linen. This antique textile is a “one-of-a-kind” piece. The blue silk and metallic threads are long gone, the gold thread with time has tarnish, antique condition, distressed. Size: 23.25" W x 39" H. A Qajar polychrome tile, of rectangular form with molded decoration painted in underglaze blue, magenta and green showing a scene from the Shahnameh of kings, with attendants, enjoying a banquet in an arcaded pavilion. Inscribed under the arches and in a tear-drop cartouche in cursive script ‘Afrasiyab, Shideh, Piru[z] and y[a]nes the year 766 (1364-5)’. Persian, late 19th century.
