Low Japanese 6-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with genre painting
About the Item
A nice, low, very decorative 6-panel byôbu (folding screen) features a continuous genre painting capturing various facets of daily life during the Edo period. It includes scenes such as boats leisurely sailing on a lake, lively activities within a temple complex, and various vignettes of people enjoying picnics, as well as visiting a tea house located along the waterfront.
The upper portion is adorned with clouds in raised gold leaf, while the lower part features embellishments in raised oxidized silver leaf, adding a dynamic contrast to the artwork.
The screen has a brocade border and a lacquered wooden frame with the original protective hardware. With it's original wooden transport box, which could explain that this antique folding screen is in such good condition.
