Baroque Statues

BAROQUE STYLE

The decadence of the Baroque style, in which ornate furnishings were layered against paneled walls, painted ceilings, stately chandeliers and, above all, gilding, expressed the power of the church and monarchy through design that celebrated excess. And its influence was omnipresent — antique Baroque furniture was created in the first design style that truly had a global impact.

Theatrical and lavish, Baroque was prevalent across Europe from the 17th to mid-18th century and spread around the world through colonialism, including in Asia, Africa and the Americas. While Baroque originated in Italy and achieved some of its most fantastic forms in the late-period Roman Baroque, it was adapted to meet the tastes and materials in each region. French Baroque furniture informed Louis XIV style and added drama to Versailles. In Spain, the Baroque movement influenced the elaborate Churrigueresque style in which architecture was dripping with ornamental details. In South German Baroque, furniture was made with bold geometric patterns.

Compared to Renaissance furniture, which was more subdued in its proportions, Baroque furniture was extravagant in all aspects, from its shape to its materials.

Allegorical and mythical figures were often sculpted in the wood, along with motifs like scrolling floral forms and acanthus leaves that gave the impression of tangles of dense foliage. Novel techniques and materials such as marquetry, gesso and lacquer — which were used with exotic woods and were employed by cabinetmakers such as André-Charles Boulle, Gerrit Jensen and James Moore — reflected the growth of international trade. Baroque furniture characteristics include a range of decorative elements — a single furnishing could feature everything from carved gilded wood to gilt bronze, lending chairs, mirrors, console tables and other pieces a sense of motion.

Pair of Reclaimed Atlas Garden Statues
Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
This highly decorative pair of near life-size composition term statues of Greek God Atlas are an imposing mythological addition to a formal garden or interior. Traditionally, Atlas is depicted holding up the heavens, an eternal punishment bestowed on him for leading the Titan rebellion against Zeus, King of the Gods. However, in these composition adaptions, the Greek God Atlas carries an urn above his head. These can be planted with flowers and foliage or used simply as statuary. Made in the mid 20th century, each term statue is crafted from a blend of cement and fibreglass with some wear throughout that gives them a beautiful time-worn appeal. Part statue, part jardiniere, these Atlas statues...

Carved Vicenza Triton Sea Centaur Sculpture or Fountain Element from Italy
Located in Dallas, TX
In Greek mythology, legendary creatures are typically not the hero of a story, but they often play a key role in advancing the narrative. Hand-carved in northeastern Italy, this Vicenza limestone sculpture illustrates such a being. It is inspired by the iconic 16th and 17th century Baroque sculptures found in Rome, Naples, Venice, and Genoa. Our mythological Triton (the generic term used to describe a merman) is actually an ichthyocentaur named Bythos. Ichtyocentaurs had the unique appearance of the upper body of a man and the forelegs of a horse with a fish tail. There are only two such entities in Greek mythology: the brothers Aphros (personified as “sea-foam”) and Bythos (“sea-depths”). According to legend, the brothers were present when the goddess Aphrodite was birthed from the sea. The two sea centaurs escorted Aphrodite to the shore, ensuring her safety. As a reward for their kind deed, the two brothers were placed in the sky forever as the constellation Pisces. Bythos is always depicted in art with a beard, as seen in our sculpture. His head is tilted back and a shell in his left hand is pressed to his lips. A large, lidded jar is in Bythos’ right hand, pressed against his torso and above the hoof, which is tucked underneath his body. His scaled tail is curled in the back, forming a volute. Beneath the animal appendages is a rectangular plinth that has been faintly textured with linear carvings. The statue has been hollowed out all the way from the shell to the base of the piece, allowing this carved sea centaur sculpture...
