Late 18th Century English George III Mahogany Knife Box Fitted Out for Letters

About the Item

Late 18th century, English George III mahogany knife box fitted out for letters / ballots. The interior voided of the old knife compartments. One small removable interior leather insert fitted in the front portion. This was probably for a ceremonial item. Original stop hinges, lock, and hardware.

  • Condition:
    Repaired: Minor veneer repairs professionally done. Very nice polished finish... Wear consistent with age and use. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Old veneer shrinkage to the back. Old veneer repairs to the back sides and front top. All veneers and shrinkage stabilized. Some staining. These conditions reflect heavy use of a functional item, probably as a letter / ballot box. Very nice polish.
