George III 18th Century Mahogany Letter Box. Circa 1790

About the Item

Fine quality circa 1790 Georgian letter box, with three compartment fitted interior (see image). Exterior has original double brass hinged slope top with serpentine shaped front, and the original feathered mahogany surface in excellent condition. All original brass mounts adorn the box, with handles to the sides resting on brass back plates; closing brass latch mounted on scalloped escutcheon with locking key; and a small circular loop handle mounted on shaped back plate for opening the top compartment. The original felt lining to the interior of the top is still intact. Unusual to find British 18th century letter boxes of this form as they are much more rare than their similarly made knife box counterpart. This well made letter box and beautifully figured mahogany finish is in completely original condition; including all of the brass fittings. Dimensions: 11 1/4" high x 8" wide x 7" deep.
