Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Four Glass Antique French Clock Set

About the Item

A rare and beautiful antique French clock garniture, in excellent original condition. Ormolu (fine gilded bronze) is mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain. Porcelain is very finely painted with maidens and putti on a cream ground. The clock is glazed to all four sides with beveled glass to allow the movement to be seen and the porcelain mounted pendulum to be seen gently swinging. The clock is of architectural design with and arched top and Corinthian columns with porcelain. To the top is an urn painted with a putto. Ovoid urn side pieces are beautifully painted with maidens to the front and romantic ruins to the revervse. The clock displays beautifully all round so could be displayed in the centre of a room or in front of a mirror. The dial is also porcelain decorated with a putto and is fitted with its original finely cut hands. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original, ormolu with silver steel rod and inset with porcelain. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a gong. We have a video of the clock set, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight wear and discolouration mostly on the high spots and pendulum. Porcelain is also excellent with very slight wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration and some light hairlining to the right hand rear pillar. Glass is very good, just a slight chip to the front door bottom left corner. Artist's signature on the vases. Complete with original pendulum and a suitable key. • Fine and Early Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Antique French Clock
By Henri Picard, Raingo Frères, Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
    Located in Belper, Derbyshire
A fine and early clock, the case by Henri Picard of Paris and the movement by Raingo Frères. It is beautifully made of ormolu (mercury fire gilded bronze doré) mounted with exquisitely painted Sèvres style porcelain with a Bleu Celeste ground. The front panel shows a young couple, tending a flock of sheep in a tranquil country setting, a sleepy town in the distance. Above the dial she sits in fine clothes and the urn to the top shows them older together, a story of their love. Side panels are beautifully decorated with bows, flowers and a quiver of arrows. Other panels are delicately decorated with over glaze gilt decoration with applied porcelain 'jewels'. The porcelain is all signed to the reveres and numbered with movement number '1453', unusually the case is also numbered. The dial is porcelain with its original finely cut brass Breguet hands and is signed for the clockmaker Raingo Frères. The rear bezel is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. Please note that this design does not have a front glass over the dial. The French movement is of high quality and is by Raingo Freres. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link. Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding clean and bright with only slight wear and discolouration. Porcelain is also excellent with no damage and hardly any wear. A few porcelain jewels are missing from the top left hand panel where the clock has been held for winding. The dial has a slight firing fault near the number five. Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu. Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Musée du Louvre today. Raingo Frères clockmaker's mark on the movement backplate Henri Picard bronze...
