Wall clock by Lancashire Watch Co. from rail station, late 19th cent. Ships free

About the Item

Late 19th century wall clock by Lancashire Watch Co. from British railway station. As the name denotes, Lancashire was primarily a watch company. Opening in 1893 in one of England’s largest factories, the company went head-to-head with American and Swiss watch makers. While their watches were of similar quality and workmanship, the cost of production was high and the margins too low to sustain a profitable company. Lancashire declared bankruptcy in 1923. Extremely rare, this wall clock is from the limited line of clocks Lancashire produced for railway stations and schools. Expertly cleaned and serviced, this clock runs beautifully, keeping accurate time. The viewing glass is faceted and enclosed by a brass surround. There is some wear to the face from the hands rubbing against it. The name of the company’s location, Prescot, is etched on the lower half of the clock face. A striking, sophisticated clock, the beauty of which makes the passage of time almost palatable. Resonating with the romance and history of so many generations who passed through the rail station, staring up at this clock on their way to meet a train or to board one taking them to war, weddings, business meetings and pleasurable vacations.
