Wilhelm Kåge Art Deco Gustavsberg Orange Haresfur Studio Pottery Jug
About the Item
Wilhelm Kåge (Swedish, 1889-1960) is often referred to as the father of Swedish modernism and remains an icon of the Swedish ceramic design of the 20th century. In 1917 he became a designer at Gustavsberg and later became artistic director. His work was highly regarded across the world with his work well represented in the collections of many European museums and collections and work is also held by the Metropolitan Museum in New York as well as many other US collections.
This stunning and beautifully made Art Deco studio pottery jug epitomises the style and design of Wilhelm Kåge and was made in the 1930’s. The jug stands on a narrow unglazed foot with slightly recessed base and is or round bulbous shape with a shaped and raised beak shaped pourer. Rather than a handle the jug has two thumb print indentations to either side of the body allowing the liquid to be poured using thumb and fore finger. The jug is decorated in matted orange glazes with a haresfur patterning and is marked GUSTAVSBERG SWEDEN to the base along with a ‘Kage Verkstad’ stamped in a box with APAK stamped around the box. This mark was used during the 1930’s.
Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces.
