Antique Huge Italian Olive Oil Jar or Amphora Great Color Italian Late 1800's
Located in Chicago, IL
Not all antique Italian glazed Olive Oil Jars or Vases are created equal and this particular Olive Oil jar’s colors are simply beyond spectacular. Dating from the late 1800’s and discovered in a field in the south of Italy by an old friend. Most people refer to these as amphora jars, beginning in the Neolithic Period and running from approximately 9000BC to 3500BC. Generally, Amphorae were used in large numbers to transport Olive Oil and Wine. The design trade and most antique dealers simply call these vessels or Olive Oil Jars. For us, we look at the Olive Oil Jars as pieces of sculpture and they are as good looking outdoors as they are in your home. The color palette and the sheen of the glaze they are simply magical and create a truly great focal point. When we started in the antique business...

Antique Rookwood Pottery Hand Painted Vessel Gorham Engraved Silver Decoration
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This late 19th century glazed earthenware mug was crafted in the studios of Cincinnati Ohio's renowned Rookwood Pottery Company and has a traditional form with an ear-shaped handle having a thumb rest. The exterior of the piece is finished in standard glaze and features hand painted decoration executed by highly regarded artist William Purcell McDonald (1864-1931). The decor has an appealing wine harvest theme consisting of grape vines that snake across the surface. The vines are studded with leaves in various shades of green along with two dangling clusters of plump reddish grapes. McDonald's application of paint is slightly raised in places giving the image a dimensional quality. The mug is further ornamented with an ornate silver overlay manufactured by Gorham. The silver decoration covers the handle and rim and includes a series of large etched foliate scrolls and flowers that extend across the body. There is also an eye-catching latticed area that provides a strong visual contrast with the gentle curving motifs found on the other parts of the silver overlay. The underside of the mug has an impressed RP mark along with shape 422 and the letter W. It also carries the incised initials of the artist - W. P. McD - and the letter L. The underside of the silver foot rim is stamped Gorham Manufacturing Co. along with a hand engraved mark reading S 1274 S. This highly collectible Rookwood silver...

19th Century Spanish Catalan Black Clay Botijo or Water Jug from Verdu
Located in Birmingham, AL
A 19th century barro negro or black clay botijo, hand made in the village of Verdú in the Catalan region of Spain, circa 1890s. This beautiful utilitarian pot, with its wide belly, top handle, and one mouth where it's filled and one mouth called a pitón or pitorro to drink from, is a traditional porous clay Spanish vessel originally designed to contain water. The botijo is a typical element of Spanish culture and can be found in nearly every rural town and varies in shape, color, and material depending on the area. The Verdú jugs are known for their ability to keep water cool and very fresh because of their porosity. The expression "they always cry" is well known. Today, this antique clay jug can be used as a vase, stand alone conversation piece, or grouped with other pieces of blackware on a table, shelf or kitchen counter. Beautifully decorative, it will be a wonderful addition to any collection. Each piece is a unique work of art, and its dusky matte patina only adds to its overall character and charm. Additional black clay pottery...

Christopher Dresser for J R Malley & Co Art Pottery Posy Holder
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
A scarce and very unusual Arts & Crafts art pottery star shaped posy holder designed by Christopher Dresser (British, 1834-1904) for J R Malley & Co and dating from around 1890. Our research suggests that J R Malley & Co operated a shop in London which sold pottery designed by Christopher Dresser. Many of the designs sold by them correspond in style to many of the notable potters at the time and it is possible that pieces like this one was actually made and marked for them to sell. This particular piece is very similar in style and manufacture to pieces produced by Ault and is designed as a hanging vessel...
