Mid 19th Century Red Yomut Chuval Fragment Rug

About the Item

This banded fragment of a Turkmen chuval seems to be a rare take on a familiar theme. The Tekke Turkmen are known both for their red and white banded chuvals, composed of a solitary ground color executed in Kilim flat-weave with interspersed narrow bands of pile. This aubergine ground piece may have been a Yomut or Chodor response to this tradition. The rare ground color of the flat-weave is pleasingly successful and highlights the jewel-like pile segments quite well. Collection of Lucille A. Lamkin.
