Sergio Rodrigues for Oca, Jacarandá Dining Chair Set of 4, Brasil, 1950s. Exceedingly rare set of 4. Appear to be all original. Original textile is faded and has some wear. Each chair with original label. Brazilian Rosewood (Jacaranda). Museum quality pieces by the father of Brazilian Modernism, Sergio Rodrigues. Stunning woodgrain. Original upholstery. Each chair Labelled with original Oca leather tag and paper label. See photos. Sergio Rodrigues is credited as the father of modern design in Brazil for having introduced a uniquely Brazilian formal vocabulary with his unique mix of thick and sturdy, “earthy” modernist style. Internationally recognized as one of Brazil's most influential modern designers, Rodrigues' most famous project is undoubtedly the Mole chair (1957), which won first prize in the 1961 International Furniture Competition in Italy. Rodrigues studied at the National School of Architecture in Rio de Janeiro. After graduating in 1952, Rodrigues focused more on furniture design and, in partnership with the Hauner brothers, Italian designers, he opened Moveis Artesanal Paranaense, the first modern art and furniture store in Curitiba. In 1955, he founded Oca, a brand based in Ipanema and focused on the development of modern Brazilian furniture. He remained in this company until 1968.Rodrigues' work defends Brazilian identity, often drawing on traditional forms and using indigenous materials, such as Peroba, Jacaranda and Imbuia woods.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Retains original Oca tag underneath. Appears to be original textile. Some fading, marks and pulls to textile. Reupholstery recommended. Gorgeous rosewood frames appear intact and stable with light signs of age and use. Please see photos.
