Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Rooftop View
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully composed and richly colored, limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino. This relatively large print, which is of a rooftop view of a temple shrine in Japan (perhaps Nagasaki as he did a similar print in 1975 but perhaps Kyoto or Tokyo) is hand pencil signed, sealed / stamped in red, numbered (18/128), and dated (1972). The image is likely from Sekino's coveted rooftop series that he did featuring various rooftop patterns from around the world including Japan and Italy. An exquisite and rare / hard-to-find work. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Y., the Art Institute Chicago, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, the British Museum, and the Portland Art Museum among many other Fine museums throughout the world. Would be a fantastic addition to any modern Japanese print...

Kawase Hasui Japanese Woodblock Print Mount Fuji in Moonlight, Kawai Bridge 1947
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful and rich woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Kawase Hasui. This print titled "Mount Fuji in Moonlight, Kawai Bridge (Tsukiyo no Fuji, Kawaibashi)" was originally published in 1947 and it depicts a man heading home crossing the river on the Kawai bridge as evening descends with the majestic Mount Fuji in the background. This wonderful image is widely considered to be one of Hasui's masterworks - with the rich blue tones of nighttime and the complexly composed placement of Mount Fuji. The woodblock print is signed Hasui and sealed Kawase, published by Watanabe Shozaburo. A rarer and harder-to-find, very coveted image by Hasui. Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino. This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner. The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work. Early 20th Century Japanese Cherry Blossom Screen by Kano Sanrakuki
Located in Kyoto, JP
Cherry Blossoms Kano Sanrakuki (1898-1981) Showa period, circa 1930 2-panel Japanese Screen Color, gofun and gold leaf on paper Against a backdrop of gold-leafed ground, the lichen covered trunk and branches of the life-sized cherry blossom tree reach out and beyond the confines of the pictorial surface. The overall composition has a feeling of flatness which draws emphasis to the surface and the three-dimensionality of the cherry blossoms. Painstakingly built-up layers of thickly applied shell-white gofun detail the voluminous blossoms and cover large areas of this tour-de-force of Japanese Nihonga painting. By simplifying the background, minimizing the number of colors and depicting the blossoms with such heavy relief, the artist has emphasized the stunning presence of the cherry tree. The type of tree depicted is the Yae-Zakura; a double-layered type of cherry blossom famed for its beauty and strength. When we think of Japanese cherry blossoms, the first thing that comes to mind is Somei Yoshino variety, which has a single flower with five almost white petals. This type is fragile and easily blown away by strong wind or rain. Most of the double-flowered cherry blossoms begin to bloom when the Somei-Yoshino falls, and the flowering period lasts longer than that of the Somei-Yoshino. Kano Sanrakuki originally studied painting at the Kyoto City Arts and Crafts School under the tutelage of Yamamoto Shunkyo...

Kiyoshi Saito Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Daitoku-Ji Kyoto D
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautifully composed woodblock print by famed Japanese printmaker Kiyoshi Saito. Many consider Saito to be one of the most important, if not the most important, contemporary Japanese printmakers of the 20th century. This print, which is titled "Daitoku-ji Kyoto (D)" is from a series of Kyoto temple images that Saito created. The woodblock print features strong, contrasting colors, beautiful wood grain, and a complex design - the cross-shaped walkway pattern which is highlighted by the small precisely placed stones is repeated on the temple wall. The wood grain in the yard, temple walls and sky add another layer of compositional depth. The print is signed in black ink and stamped/sealed in red within the image It is likely titled, dated (1960), and numbered (from a limited edition of 150) in pencil by the artist in the lower margin but hidden below the mat. Saito's "self-carved, self printed Kiyoshi Saito" personal label with his red chop seal...

This work is a quite rare self-printed lifetime double dai Oban large-size print. The quality and colors are striking.
