1898, Waltham 7 Jewel, Sublime Fancy Dial, Yellow Gold Filled

About the Item

I really think I am a kid at heart. I get so excited to bring another rarity to istDibs. Part of the reason might be that it can take up to a year to complete a project. When it finally gets completed, well let’s say I become a kid. As the years have gone by, my tastes and watch offerings have been refined. There are some great sellers on this platform, I want to be different. I want to offer the unusual, the highly collectible, that hard to find vintage time pieces that has been restored, a watch that could be handed down to the next generation. I understand the value of a quality vintage wristwatch. In particular since some of mine are some of the earliest wristwatches dating back to the 1900’s. This treasure is a caliber 7 jeweled movement, this was considered one of the “Work Horses” back then. You have an opportunity to own it Us the pictures to help you with your description. Keep in mind that this watch is a few years young, it is not perfect! Let’s talk about this dial. To me, this is the crown jewel. The enamel dial is white, It has been carefully accented with gold accents below the numbers, the sublime design aesthetic are the bright leprechaun green dots above the numbers. The cherry on top of this watch sundae are the Louis Hands that finish off this treasure. For this that are new to collecting Trench or WW1 watches, the more common size is considered the “0” sized movement: See below 6s common 1 11/30″ 1.366″...........34.70 MM 0s common 1 5/30″ (.166″ .........29.62 MM 3/0s uncommon 1 3/30″ 1.100″ .........27.94 MM The 3/0 size WW1/ Trench watches are getting much more difficult to source, especially in good condition. I am offering are hard to find treasure. I have been collecting, buying and selling early American wrist watches for a long time. This is a real treasure, and you won't see too often. This Trench Watch features the very hard to find an Arabic Numerals on a stark white background, a striking look and very easy to read. It gets better. There is a gold "Wreath" motif decorating the inside of the dial. A black minute outer track border with bright kelly green dots highlighting the 5 minute markers. The case measures 31.00 MM across The case measures 37.00MM Lug to Lug Read below how “Trench Watches” were founded. WW1 for those history buffs was from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. What is a ”Trench Watch”, for those who don’t know here is a brief explanation. What are WW1 or Trench watches? They were created using 3/0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. They often have some of the following characteristics: Fixed or Wire Lug: No traditional spring bar attachment as found in today’s watches. I have outfitted the watch with an open ended watch band that I acquired from the UK, it is a 12MM black with a yellow buckle to complete the look. Case Material: It or often Solid Gold / Sterling Silver , / Silverode or Gold Filled. This case is gold-filled, it does have some marks, fine After all this case is almost 100 years young. Remember that, this is not a new case, although I have tried my best to restore this treasure to its former glory, I think I did a great job. It does have some gentle pry marks by the opening lip. *For more practical purposes, a special alloy was developed which went by several different names, such as, "Silveroid, Silverore, Silverode or Silverine. "Silveroid" appears to have become the standard name for this metal that consisted of 45% nickel, 54% copper and 1% manganese. This metal was fairly hard wearing and could withstand the rigors of everyday use, for instance on the Railroads. Case Manufactures: There were many case manufacturers that made cases for Trench Watches. Some of the more well know were: Dennison English Manufacturer Illinois, not affiliated with the Illinois Watch Company, Depollier and Sons, Wadsworth, Fahys, Philadelphia, Fortune and many more What did I do to this watch? • 1919 Waltham "Wandering Second" 15 Jewels with Stunning Movement
    By American Waltham Watch Co.
    Located in Raleigh, NC
I have a shameless commercial plug for my shop. Many of my watches were used in the filming of an Epic Film due to be released in May 2023. The studio selected my shop due to the authentic restoration couple with the time period of 1919-1926. I will mention two actors who are in the upcoming movie, Leonardo Di Capra and Robert Di Nero… more to come. It was an honor and validated my shop for its authentic restoration practices. What a treat! Have you ever run across a “Wandering Second” WW1 / Trench watch. But……it is not your ordinary offering, look at the gold colored screws and gold-colored wheels. What a treat. This combination is very difficult to source in operating condition today, so many have abused as Father Time has passed us by. This is a 15-jewel movement, this was better than most that were 7 jewels, it was more reliable. This style is called a cushion for its shape which was popular in the early wrist watch era. The often-housed round dials with no seconds or a traditional second hand at six o’clock. Many of the WW1 wrist watches use 0 size movements, see below was size reference. 5/0s 26.25 mm 1.033 in 1 130 in 4/0s 27.09 mm 1.067 in 1 115 in 3/0s 27.94 mm 1.100 in 1 110 in 2/0s 28.79 mm 1.133 in 1 215 in 0s 29.63 mm 1.167 in 1 16 in I used the terms Trench Watch. What exactly is that? History about Trench Watches What is a “Trench Watch” ? They were created using 3-0 and 0 size pocket watch movements and installing into watch cases that were meant to worn on the wrist. The watch movement companies would send their movements to independent jewelers, who in turn would select the cases to house the movement. So the ordering process might go like this. A customer walks into a jeweler, with the help of the jeweler, the customer selects a 15 jeweled movement, then they go on to the case selection. The jeweler may recommend a higher end case manufactures like Depollier, and then it is the style of case as many manufactures had several different styles. Once a complete selection was made, the jeweler put it together and delivered the watch. That is how many Trench Watches (wrist watches) were born in the early 1900's. The movements often came from women pocket watches...

  • 1920"s Art Deco Gruen Quadron 15 Jewel, Restored, 14KY Gold Filled
    By Gruen
    Located in Raleigh, NC
My shop was recently selected to supply vintage American watches for a premier movie starring some major actors and a world famous director. They were looking for authentic watches that would represent the time period from 1915-1926. I was selected because of my attention to detail and originality. It is a true story of events that took place during the 1920’s. This would of been a perfect watch style for the film. Gruen "Quadron Model 63" Men's Art Deco design wristwatch in 14K yellow gold fill, circa 1930. This Quadron model has a large stepped case with a recessed crown. It was priced at $52.50 in 1930. It is in excellent condition showing only a few tiny specks of brassing to the bezel corners and a little to the tips of the lugs. The case back is excellent and unengaged, it does have a tiny flea bite. Dial is very good. Case measures 38mm long and 24mm wide. The watch is powered by its correct 15-jewel Gruen grade 157 Quadron manual wind movement, just serviced and running strong. In years from the 1920s through the 1940s, the Gruen Watch Company of USA & Switzerland was one of the leaders in wristwatch design and quality, even working together with Rolex. In 1925, Gruen introduced the men's Quadron. Similar in concept to the women's Cartouche models, these were rectangular watches containing very high-quality 15-j or 17-j tonneau-shaped movements. A larger movement is generally more reliable and accurate, and is generally more rugged, than a smaller one of the same quality, so the Gruen Cartouche and Quadron, with their case-filling, purpose-built movements performed much better than the small, round movements used by most of their competitors at the time. Round movements were still used in the less expensive rectangular Gruen wristwatches...

  • Rare 1947 Palladium / Diamond Dial 19 Jewel
    By Hamilton
    Located in Raleigh, NC
Welcome to Vintage Watch Corner, where one can find the most unusual timepieces that are sure to have stories that will never be revealed. Everyone looks at your watch and it represents who you are, your values and your personal style. Jewelry isn’t really my thing, but I’ve always got my eye on people’s watches. It is a quiet personal statement. My apologies for the long listing. I am laying the foundation for you to understand what I have listed. This is a “Palladium Cased – Diamond Dial” Hamilton from 1947. This is not your ordinary watch. Let me make one thing clear. Hamilton never sanctioned the reacasing of Hamilton movements with diamond dials and different alloys. It was done anyway. There are many varieties of Hamilton Diamond Dials with solid rose gold, solid yellow gold , solid platinum and of coursed solid palladium. You can find many platinum and gold examples, yet it is more difficult to find a Palladium example. Look at this offering very closely. If you are discerning and are looking for a distinctive watch that can be passed down generations, look no further. A Rare Palladium Hidden Lug Hamilton, with a diamond dial that is matched with Hamilton’s finest quality wristwatch movement, it doesn’t get better than that! We call that “Watch” Nirvana. This watch has lived 76 beautiful years and is looking for another place to call home! This watch is outfitted with one of Hamilton’s finest quality movements, the venerable 982M (Medallion), read below for a more detailed explanation. It is a mechanical masterpiece The 982M is virtually identical to the 982 movement, except it is finished to a higher degree of tolerances and decoration. On the back of the 982M you can see the gold "medallion" representing that this is a special movement. Considering most people would never look at the back of the watch movement - the fact that Hamilton put so much attention to detail in the fine finish work of their movements is a testament to their premier quality. Under the dial is a 19 jewel 982 Medallion movement. The 982M was introduced in 1940 and replaced the high grade 982 movement in solid gold models. The 982 and 982M are virtually identical other than the additional damascening and gold (orangish) highlights on the movement back. Hamilton touted the 982M as the height of accuracy noting its cap jewels on the escape wheel and Elinvar (“Elasticity Invariable”) hairspring. Additionally, Hamilton promoted the 982M movement as having increased durability, which predated the incabloc shock absorbing mechanism from Switzerland. Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Year 1947 Grade 982M Size 14/0 Jewels 19 Type Hunting Settings Pendant Production From 1940 Quantity 110131 Remarks Gold Medallion Introduced in 1941 and concluded in 1951 Did you know that Palladium is more rare than Platinum. As of this listing Platinum is $941.00 and Palladium is $1094…. Platinum and Palladium Differences The main differences between Platinum vs Palladium are: Platinum is its own metal, whereas palladium is part of the platinum group metals Palladium is more rare, whereas platinum engagement rings are easier to find Platinum is a heavier metal, whereas palladium rings are more lightweight Palladium jewelry often used as men’s wedding band, whereas platinum rings are often used as engagement rings All jewelers will work on platinum jewelry, but not every jeweler will work on palladium, they don’t have the expereince Palladium is more rare than platinum. But like platinum, it’s not normally found in its own deposits but in other ore bearing mines. Most palladium comes from nickel-copper mines. It was discovered by William Hyde Wollastonin 1803. The word "palladium" is derived from the name Pallos. Pallos was an asteroid discovered around this time. Most palladium is mined in Russia but it’s also found in the United States, Finland, Australia, Canada, and Zimbabwe. Because of its rarity, palladium rings aren’t easy to find. They’re less common than platinum rings. Even though palladium jewelry has been around for quite some time, people didn’t really start picking up on it within the last 20 years. My speculation is that it's largely due to the internet. Besides jewelry, palladium is used in metal instruments like dental tools and electronics. Waltham Watch Company History The Waltham Watch Company was an American watch manufacturing house founded in 1850 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. It was the first American company to mass-produce watches using interchangeable parts. The company's watches were known for their quality and affordability, and they quickly became popular with consumers. Waltham played a major role in the development of the American watch industry as well as establishing the concept of “mass produced” products. By the way, Henry Ford was a watchmaker, and he was inspired to build cars the same way Waltham Watches were produced, for the masses with interchangeable parts. Waltham’s success helped to make the United States a major player in the global watch market as well as promote the idea of “industrialization.” Before the Waltham Watch Company, watches were generally produced by hand, in “cottage” industries. They were owned by the wealthier class or the “working class” that needed to know the time. The company's affordable watches made them accessible to a wider range of people and helped to change the way people thought about time. Prior to this, people used their local Church bells to direct them in their daily lives. The Company continued to grow and prosper throughout the 19th century. During the American Civil War, they supplied watches to the military, and of course they grew because of this association. In 1885, they moved their headquarters to Waltham, Massachusetts, and changed their name to the American Waltham Watch Company. Waltham was a major exhibitor at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The company's exhibit at the exposition was housed in a large pavilion that was designed to resemble a factory. The pavilion was filled with watches of all shapes and sizes, as well as machinery used in the manufacturing process. The exhibit was a major success, and it helped to raise the profile of Waltham watches around the world. Amongst the visitors at the exhibition was a contingent from Switzerland. When they realized what Waltham was doing, they quickly understood that their methods were outdated and soon enough they would be a country unable to compete. They also went to the Waltham factory for a visit after the exhibition. It is said that they purchased a few of Waltham’s higher grade movements. The director of the factory said he would have them “adjusted” before they left, but they said it was not necessary. When they arrived back in Switzerland, they checked them and were shocked at the level of quality and accuracy. This prompted them to buy some of the equipment that Waltham was using so they could start building better watches that were less expensive and more accurate. Some of that machinery ended up in the small town of Schaffhausen and became The International Watch Company. They are still in business today making exceptional watches. The military, for any nation, is a powerful source of revenue for industrial contracts. So, any industry would prosper during war and Waltham continued to be a supplier to the military for over 100 years. Through WW 1...
