Rare Pair of Custom Paul Laszlo Slipper Chairs in Maria Kipp Upholstery

About the Item

Wonderful pair of petite slipper chairs by the illustrious "Millionaire's Architect", Paul Laszlo. The Modern Chinoiserie design includes a pediment top and a low seat above open fretwork. The chairs retain the original Maria Kipp striped upholstery, which is very well preserved. Both Laszlo and Kipp were prominent Eastern European Modernist who relocated to Southern California at the advent of WWII. Laszlo quickly established himself as the preferred architect and interior designer for the Hollywood set. Kipp's upholstery was used by the leading architects of the day, and is particularly associated with the Modernist European refugees that defined the post-war LA aesthetic, including Laszlo, Rudolf Schindler and Richard Neutra. Kipp's work is widely considered as influential as her contemporary Anni Albers. These chairs come from a private Laszlo Los Angeles commission.
