Cupid Bending a Bow by Giulio Campi
About the Item
probably sold, Hutchins, London, 7-14 February 1785
Born into a Cremonese family of artists, Giulio Campi was probably trained by his father, Galeazzo. Cremonese painting in the sixteenth century was distinguished by its readiness to assimilate external artistic influences, and Campi’s earliest paintings from the late 1520's exhibit the decided touch of the Brescian masters Moretto da Brescia, Girolamo Romanino and Giovanni Girolamo Savoldo, while stylistic elements of Pordenone, Raphael and Giulio Romano soon crept into the young artist’s work. Primarily occupied with important ecclesiastical commissions in Cremona, Campi honed his distinctive, multi-layered style. One of his most important works was the rebuilding and decoration of Cremona’s Santa Margherita, begun in 1547, for which he used both his architectural and painterly talents. The sophistication and complexity of Campi’s work in this period, characterized by a richly inspired use of color and a distinct Mannerist tendency, influenced Cremonese painting in the following decades. Constantly evolving artistically, Campi’s paintings of the late 1550's exhibit a distinct Roman mood in their illusionism and monumentality, due most likely to a visit in the middle of that decade to the Eternal City. Campi’s late works, such as the painting of the Cremona Cathedral’s enormous organ shutters, are characterized by a compositional simplicity, perhaps mirroring the mood of the Counter-Reformation.
Formerly owned by the Irish-born portrait painter and founding member of the Royal Academy, Nathaniel Hone, this double-sided sheet of studies of putti, with its quick and confident execution in red chalk, is comparable to several sanguine drawings by Campi, including Liutista e figura femminile, now in the Uffizi, Florence (see M. Gregori, ed., I Campi e la cultura artistica cremonese del Cinquecento, Milan, 1985, p. 281, no. 2.6.1.). Similarly handled putti sketches by Campi include a study for Putti Carrying the Instruments of Christ’s Torture, now in the National Gallery, Prague (see M. Zlatohlávek and G. Bora, Drawings from Cremona, 1500-1580, Prague, 1995, pp. 106-7, no. 33).

John Varley is known as an English landscape painter in watercolor and a close friend of William Blake. Varley represents the transition between tinted topographical drawing and the bolder, more fully developed manner of watercolor painting characteristic of the 19th century. As well as being a leading painter, he was the most popular and enthusiastic teacher of his day: his pupils included Cox, De Wint, Linnell, Mulready (his brother-in-law), and Samuel Palmer, and he published various instructional works, including one with Blake.
In his early years Varley was influenced stylistically by the work of Thomas Girtin...
