Andy Warhol
Roll Over Mouse

1983

About the Item

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art but had an unrivaled influence on artists and image-making. In the 1950s, Warhol began his career as a fashion or commercial illustrator drawing advertisements for a number of companies selling fashion, footwear, textiles, and books. The artist's early exposure to advertising and image-making for the masses was an important ingredient in his evolution as an artist. While Warhol was frequently obsessed with the culture of his day, he was simultaneously a student and collector of the past. Created in 1983, this charming work on paper comes from Warhol's "Toy Paintings" series where he drew inspiration from his delightful collection of international toys and their packaging. "Roll Over Mouse" reimagines the exterior packaging of a Japanese wind-up mouse by the same name. The artwork captures the toy's animated dynamism while also honoring its nostalgic significance and its important role in American childhood. As with the best of his work, Warhol examines the influence of consumerism at every stage of life, while simultaneously elevating the playful mouse to the status of a cultural icon. Rendered in black and white, this unique work on paper recalls, is almost a sequel of sorts to some of his paintings from the 1960's whose images were pulled from advertisements such as "Before and After 4" or "$199 Television" and "Cooking Pot" As the Warhol market continues to gallop to a stratosphere beyond, there are fewer and fewer examples of pivotal works in circulation. • Weegee "A Trip to Mars"
    By Weegee
    Located in Toronto, Ontario
While many first associate Weegee (aka Arthur Fellig) with New York City crime scenes, perhaps a broader and more consistent theme is that of spectacle and/or urban entertainment. The origins of his nick-name and reputation date back to the 1930s when he became the first New York City press photographer to obtain permission to install a police radio in his car. Following the city's first responders and documenting their duties, Weegee had unprecedented access to New York’s fires, crimes, debaucheries and of course, murders. During the first decade of his career these unflinching urban tragedy or crime images paid Weegee's bills, but as he became more financially independent he was more inspired to pursue photographs on his own agenda. While his oeuvre is vast, Weegee was especially drawn to entertainment: nightlife, circuses, the theatre, showgirls, city thrills, the cinema etc. Some of Weegee's most dynamic and tender (and under-appreciated!) images are related to simply having fun (in a crowd). He was not confined to one neighbourhood or demographic. He captured action, faces and events from Coney Island to the Bowery and Greenwich Village, to Times Square and Harlem. In “A Trip To Mars,” Weegee depicts a multi-generational group crowding around a large telescope...

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art but had an unrivaled influence on artists and image-making. In recent years there has been new scholarship and increasing commercial interest in Andy Warhol's early works, specifically the material created prior to Pop Art. During the 1950s Warhol established his reputation in New York City as a trendy illustrator contributing to a wide number of fashion publications and retailers. His simple line drawings were modern and gentle, with a subtle but unmistakably gay touch. In a short period of time, he created a signature aesthetic that was versatile yet distinctively his. Like the consummate artist that he was, Warhol was frequently drawing. While fashion illustration was his livelihood, he was more inspired creating male portraiture and erotica. Such images were romantic, hopeful, and unabashedly gay. Unsurprisingly, there was little commercial interest in such works at the time of creation, even in cosmopolitan New York City. Taschen, the legendary art book publisher, recently released the book Andy Warhol: Love, Sex and Desire 1950-1962 which celebrates his drawings of the male form - and has encouraged a new generation of collectors and curators to re-examine Warhol's early explicitly gay material. This drawing, evocative of the book, is a paradigm of Warhol's mastery of line. Positioned in the center of this work is a man's nude midsection, legs spread, confronting the viewer. The simplicity and ease of Warhol's stylized aesthetic offers a gentle twist on the provocative subject matter. With the lightest touch, Warhol masterly portrays the male sex...
