Untitled (Plate 1) DLM Color lithograph, 1963 Unsigned and unnumbered (as usual) From: Derriere le Miroir, No. 141 Published by A. Maeght, Paris Image/sheet size: 14 7/8 x 11 inches Condition: Excellent, colors very fresh Note: Derriere le Miroir (Behind the Mirror) The color lithograph is Calder’s homage to his large metal sculpture of the same design The art journal "Derriere le Miroir" (abbreviated to DLM) appeared in print from 1946 to 1982. Published by the French art dealer, collector and publisher Aime Maeght, it ran to two hundred and fifty issues. Galerie Maeght, which opened in Paris in 1945 in Paris, exhibited the work of distinguished contemporary artists, including Bonnard, Matisse, Braque, Leger, Steinberg, Chagall, Bram, van de Velde, Miro, Kandinsky, Giacometti, Ubac, Bazaine, Calder, Derain, Chillida, Tapies and many others. Publication of DLM launched Maeght's career as a publisher. The art magazine "Derriere le miroir" - designed like an exquisite work of art - always appeared in the same format (38 x 28 cm) and included numerous original lithographs by the above mentioned artists.

ABOUT THE ARTIST Robert Vale Faro (1902-1988) was a modernist architect and artist associated with the Chicago Bauhaus. He received his degree in architecture and design from the Armour Institute in Chicago and worked at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1924-27, where he was influenced by Harry Kurt Bieg and Le Corbusier. Upon his return to Chicago, Faro worked with the important modernist Chicago architects George and William Keck under Louis Sullivan. Faro founded the avant-garde printmaking group Vanguard in 1945.
