Emily Farnham Art

American

Born in Kent in 1912, Emily Farnham studied at Cleveland School of Art and earned her MA and Ph.D. degrees at Ohio State University. She studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown and New York. Dr. Farnham stated that Hofmann had the greatest influence on her life. In 1980, Dr. Farnham moved to Provincetown, after a prominent career as a university professor, artist and author. Dr. Farnham taught at Kent State University, East Carolina University and the ECU's European Studies Center in Bonn, Germany. She has taught over 8,000 students throughout her career. She has also had many shows of her works, including a 2002 retrospective show at the Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown. Dr. Farnham had an extensive art library, and authored two books, Charles Demuth; Behind the Laughing Mask, which received a National Book Award nomination and Hofmann: Abstraction As Plastic Expression and Notes Made In Hofmann's Classes. Dr. Emily Farnham died on May 5, 2004, in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
