Frank Leslie True Art

American, 1877-1963

Frank Leslie True was born in Iowa in 1877. He moved to California in 1906. For 45 years, he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad while sketching and painting in his leisure. During this period he painted in the Western states of the Pacific Coast, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. Upon retirement in 1943, he worked in Berkeley for Cutter Laboratories for one year. While there, he studied with Charles Horton and then moved to Santa Cruz, where he continued his art training with Claude Buck. During his last 20 years, he painted coastal scenes and landscapes of Mono Hot Springs, Kings River Canyon and other scenic spots of Northern California. True died in Santa Cruz, California in 1963. He was a member of the Santa Cruz Art League and the Society of Western Artists (SWA).

Born in 1883 in Denmark to artistically inclined parents, Johann Berthelsen would become a widely successful singer, teacher, and painter. After his parents divorced, his mother brought Berthelsen and his siblings with her to the United States in 1890, eventually settling in Wisconsin. At eighteen, Berthelsen moved to Chicago in the hope of becoming an actor, but a friend at the Chicago Musical College convinced him to audition at his school. Berthelsen received a full scholarship and enrolled at the college, where he was awarded the Gold Medal twice. After graduating, he had an active career traveling across the United States and Canada performing in operas and concerts, before joining the voice faculty at his alma mater in 1910.
