A drawing by Fernando Botero. "Dibujo a la Manera de Velasquez" is a portrait, charcoal and pastel on cardboard in an earth-tone palette by Latin American artist Fernando Botero. It is signed upper right, "Sobre Velazquez Botero -1-27-60 Para Rita. el recuerdo de uno payaso". Fernando Botero, best known for his voluptuously rotund human figures, was born in Medellín, Colombia on April 19, 1932. His father died when he was young, and he was raised by his mother, along with his two brothers. He attended a Jesuit school in Medellín and from the age of 12 to 14, he attended a matador training school. The bull fight became a recurring theme in Botero’s early work and while he was in his early teens, he sold his pictures of bull fights in front of the arena. By the time he was 16 years of age, Botero was working as an illustrator for the local magazine El Colombiano. He also began writing articles about art theory, one of which, entitled Picasso and Non-Conformity in Art, led to his expulsion from the Jesuit school for its endorsement of Cubism. Matted dimensions: 12 H x 17.25 W x .5 D inches Vernon Wilson studied at the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, the University of Miami and Belmont Abbey College. He exhibited widely and with success including at the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (1923, 1928, 1929), the Pittsburgh Architectural Club (1933) and the Los Angeles Art Association, among others. In the late 1960's, Wilson joined the faculty of the Art Center's College of Design where he would teach for more than 25 years. A well-respected figure drawing teacher and pastelist, he is a noted influence on contemporary artists including Kurt Wenner, Ken Goldman and America Martin, among many others. In 1997, Wilson retired to New Mexico where he continued to draw and paint for the remainder of his life. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871-1950) A Man writing at his desk, 18th century interior scene Pastel on paper Signed upper right 20.5 x 15.8 cm Framed under glass : 37 x 31.5 cm It is known that Guirand de Scevola was very interested in the Palace of Versailles and its Old Regime atmosphere, that he often painted it and that he participated in the Versailles Revival movement at the beginning of the century. This probably led him to paint scenes in the 18th century style, for which he was particularly well known and which are still sought after. What is striking is the modernity of the execution of our pastel, which obviously contrasts with its subject in the style of the 18th century. Guirand de Scevoal is a great colourist and he proves it here with eclat, by building up his composition with white pastel highlights, contrasting with brown and black. There is something of the northern painters in this treatment of light. All this, as always with him, is very subtle.
