Plinio Colombi (Swiss, * 14.2.1873 Ravecchia † 22.9.1951 Spiez) Disteln (Swiss Thistles) • Oil on artist board ca. 47.5 x 49.5 cm • Frame ca. 57 x 60 cm • Signed & dated 1949 lower left Well known Swiss landscape painter and still life painter. He enjoyed painting the Swiss alpine thistles, of which we have an accomplished example here on offer. Plinio Colombi commenced in 1893 to study architecture at the technical college of Winterthur in Switzerland. He then changed direction and began to occupy himself with fine art. He ends up in Paris, hanging out with the artistic crowd of the day. Plinio then return to Switzerland, probably for financial reasons and settles in Bern to earn a living as painter/decorator. In his free time he creates landscapes, which display a closeness to the symbolist painter Arnold Böcklin. From about 1905 on, somewhat influenced by a young Ferdinand Hodler, Plinio begins to develop his own, unique naturalistic stile. Colombi paints subjects all over Switzerland and eventually settled down in 1924 in Spiez on the Lake of Thun, at the foot of the Bernese Alps.
