Thomas Gainsborough Art

English, 1727-1788
Known for his portraits, Gainsborough himself considered himself primarily a landscape painter. But landscapes were not marketable in England at the time, and the artist's main income came from portraits. Nevertheless, in Gainsborough's work, landscape plays no less of a role than portraits, both in quality and quantity. The practice of creating small landscapes as an attempt to look through and see the overall pattern and intent became his preferred method of working. In addition, Gainsborough often turned to the works of seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painters for inspiration. With the study of the Old Masters, Gainsborough's landscapes developed an emphasis on the background. The glittering dales, highlighted by light and beckoning to the viewer, give the landscapes of the mature period depth. Gainsborough skillfully combined the realism of the Dutch landscape with the lightness and decorativeness of the French one. The artist's style of painting became increasingly broad and free, and the color layer more fluid. Gainsborough drew inspiration for this work from a painting attributed to Peter Molyneux (1595 - 1661) and, of course, the painting present seems to have been based on the work, an artist whose work appeared whose work was in Gainsborough's personal collection2. Massive trees dominate the left side of the composition, opening to the right. In the landscape painted for the exhibition, Gainsborough filled both sides and the entire top of the canvas with depictions of tree crowns, balancing both parts of the composition and echoing the somber majesty of Jacob van Reisdal's landscapes3. The changeable play of light and shadow in the dense foliage is given a dramatic quality that is offset by the overall lyrical mood of the landscape. The lightness of the brush and the freedom of the painterly manner shades the compositional clarity. The main role here is played by light. It, for the first time, begins to play a constructive role. The landscape is permeated with light, but the light is not bright, the scattered light of the English sky. It is light that is the main innovation of Gainsborough in the field of landscape, which opened the way to its further development up to Romanticism and the paintings of John Constable, an admirer of Gainsborough's work.

LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L. PROVENANCE NEAL AUCTION COMPANY, New Orleans, LA, USA Private Collection, Barcelona Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

"My recent work now becomes more involved with cloud cover and its effect on light and colour through both its translucent and opaque properties. Clouds are visible masses of water droplets or frozen ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. They have the ability to refract and reflect, creating an ever changing perception of light which inspires my use of colour. I am constantly referring to the paradox of a cloud’s perceived weight and its fragility and the relationship between the cool and warm colours created by it. I have become increasingly interested in catching the moment when heavy overcast clears to reveal clear blue sky, a cool colour that complements the warmth it brings. While the most obvious manifestation of light refraction at this time would occur in the form of a rainbow, I will be concerned with accentuating the infinite, more subtle effects. I find myself inspired increasingly by the works of Turner, who created ephemeral atmospheric effects using large washes of liquid paint. Other influences include Henry Matisse, Francis Cadell...

Matted size: 20.25" x 16.5". Image size: 3.25" x 5". Mint condition. Thomas Gainsborough, (christened 14 May 1727 – 2 August 1788), was an English portrait and landscape painter. He left home in 1740 to study art in London with Hubert Gravelot, Francis Hayman, and William Hogarth. In 1746, he married Margaret Burr, and they became parents of two daughters. He moved to Bath in 1759 where fashionable society patronised him, and he began exhibiting in London.
