Spanish Colonial Furniture

SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE

After the conquest of Mexico in 1521 and the Philippines in 1565, Spain dictated a global culture. The colonization of territories in the Americas, Western Europe, Africa, Oceania and the Pacific imposed the values of Spain, including Catholicism, while the extraction of resources reinforced the empire’s wealth and power. Unlike many styles that came out of European colonialism, such as British Colonial, Spanish Colonial furniture and architecture frequently mixed local heritage with the artistic traditions of Spain.

Spanish Colonial furniture was informed by the shifting styles of Europe as well as Indigenous culture. There were Inca tapestries depicting Spanish coats of arms and Baroque chairs adorned with tropical flora. The butaca, a low easy chair popular in the Caribbean, was inspired by Rococo’s curving forms and the shape of precolonial seating. In New Mexico, Pueblo artisans carved chests with patterns reminiscent of Anasazi art.

Even within the homes of the wealthy, furniture was usually restricted to necessities like benches, desks, cupboards and chests. These were often ornately designed and especially important for storing prized goods like textiles. Spanish Colonial houses were built with adobe and clay and tended to be minimally decorated, so the style’s heavily carved wooden furniture pieces stood out against a home’s white stucco walls.

The Spanish Colonial period mostly came to an end after the territories achieved independence from Spain. However, its aesthetics continued to influence Southwestern style and Spanish Colonial Revival style after Spanish Colonial style was used extensively at San Diego’s 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

17th Century Spanish Colonial Hispano-Philippine Carved Santo
Located in Forney, TX
A scarce 17th century Spanish Colonial carved wood santo with provenance from the National Museum of the Philippines Manila. circa late 1600s A large part of what makes this example so very rare is not just the age and condition, but the saint depicted, San Roque. The Hispano-Philippine (Spanish-Filipinos) hand carved hard wood religious altar figure presents splendidly, with scattered remnants of original gesso and polychrome pigments, the exceptionally sculpted religious folk art depicting San Roque (Saint Roch or Rocco), the 14th century Catholic patron saint frequently invoked against the plaque, various infectious disease, as well as patron saint of dogs, invalids, of falsely accused people, and of bachelors, amongst others. Provenance / Acquisition: Retaining registration - identification label to verso from The Republic of the Philippines (RP) National Museum of the Philippines Manila with hand written registration number. Acquired from highly reputable auction house, Austin Auction Gallery, est. 1982, Austin, Texas. February 2022 catalog. Dimensions: (approx) Overall: 15.75" High, 5" Wide, 4" Deep. Figure: 14" High 1.5lbs Great original antique condition, especially considering it's around 350 years old. Nicely aged patina over the whole. Presented on a later wood plinth base. Typical loss to right arm, minor finish losses, old tiny metal plate added to prevent age related splitting, all wear consistent with age, and only adds to the overall sophisticated character, authenticity, and charming rustic warmth that can only be acquired over long periods of time. We here at Lynx Hollow Antiques absolutely love religious antiques, from an antique altar, church architectural salvaged building and ornamental elements, reliquary, tabernacle cabinet...

Mid-Century Tooled Leather Sling Ottoman by Angel Pazmino, Ecuador, c. 1960s
Located in Deland, FL
Introducing a rare sling stool by the incomparable Angel Pazmino. Recently and painstakingly restored by our team of craftsmen this iconic ottoman has a new lease on life and we love the results. The solid jacaranda wood frame has been hand-sanded and refinished but we left some of the archetypal and intentional patina which adds character to an already character-rich piece. The upholstery has been re-done in a thick-cut genuine leather hide in homage to Pazmino's original design and intention. The seat has been hand-tooled with love and dedication to the exact dimensions and methods of the original and perfectly offsets the rich woodgrains of the jacaranda wood and even show the ranch brand of the cow as Pazmino often did to emphasize his rustic, back to basics approach. Angel Pazmino is an Ecuadorian furniture maker who has, in recent years, earned world-wide acclaim for his unlikely merging of pre-Columbian American and Mid-Century Modern design elements into his works. Born in 1926, Pazmino began his woodworking career in 1944 as a cabinet maker. Throughout the 1950's and 60's Pazmino travelled throughout the Americas where he exhibited his work and took inspiration from traditional Ameri-Indian artists and techniques. In the late 1960's he added his second authorial characteristic, incorporating graphic elements from the continent's native cultures reviving, as he put it, “the ancient and aristocratic art of leather embossing,” learning from such artisans as master saddler Ignacito Ortiz. His works have been collected by designers, state leaders and most famously Pope John Paul II who, according to Pazmino himself, took two sling chairs back to the Vatican when they were only meant to be borrowed during his 1985 visit to Ecuador. Simultaneously rustic and elegant, functional and aesthetically pleasing this restored sling stool is absolutely arresting from every angle. Ideal for collectors and designers alike who appreciate the unparalleled designs and artwork of Angel Pazmino and are searching for a Pazmino sling ottoman that is ready for a lifetime more of use. With it's mesmerizing variegated woodgrains unique to the jacaranda tree, expert hand-tooled leather work and instantly recognizable stance this artfully crafted and restored ottoman is sure to make a BOLD impression in any space it inhabits. The very epitome of one-of-a-kind, make this sling footstool...

Rare Aztec Colonial Polychromed Wood Sculpture! Holy Imagene Bultos Santos Icons
Located in Peoria, AZ
MUSEUM PERFECTION ! AZTEC INFLUENCED LATIN AMERICAN COLONIAL ART AMAZINGLY RARE PIECE ! Approx. 14" x 8" x 2 1/2" After Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztec empire, painting and sculpture schools were set up within missions to produce art for Roman Catholic worship in Spanish America to promote Christian evangelization. The works that emerge from this period are great historic treasures and tell us much about this time in history. Icons were important in this conversion process. Here is an Imagene that was likely employed in a church from the 17th century. It features 5 elaborately carved faces and figures depicting angels and saints. This piece is magnificent for many reasons, but the most important reason is that this piece illustrates the bridge between the Spanish and Aztec art schools. The Aztecs had developed the most splendid feather art in the world. Feather mosaics (arte plumario in Spanish, amantecayotl in Nahuatl), were created by specially trained and talented Aztec nobles. The blue green iridescent color of hummingbird feathers had made them a regular form of tribute to Aztec rulers and art that featured these feathers were incomparable. The Spanish art instructors adopted feathers into traditional Catholic imagery and this piece shows the result of such hybrid. Here feathers are prominently sculpted into the background and were polychromed with sensational hues to reflect the native love and cultural appreciation for feather art. Few feather mosaics survive because of their temporal frailty, but the wood worked feathers in this piece give scholars and collectors a lasting indication of how Aztecs stylistically used the feathers in their pieces. Aztec religious leaders wore headdresses and garments made of feathers - and here these saints appear to be wearing feather headdresses! Even after centuries, the colors of this piece are incredibly compelling. Fragments of the rich blue green pigment that was applied to mimic the hummingbird feathers are still present. The golds, yellows and browns display spectacular understanding of complementary colors. What's more this piece also shows Aztec sun imagery incorporated into the design! On the reverse side of the Saints' faces we see a vivid blue sun burst type design which clearly was an Aztec motif of the period and has no comparable counterpart in Catholic holy treasures...

Framed Embossed Leather Pre-Columbian Folk Art by Angel Pazmino, Ecuador, 1960
Located in Deland, FL
Introducing an extraordinary embossed leather art by the incomparable furniture designer and artisan Angel Pazmino. Cut from a set of sling chairs by Pazmino this truly one of a kind artwork is the epitome of 'custom' and 'hand-made'. The frame has been hand-milled from a solid slab of sustainably sourced American black walnut by our carpenters perfectly offsetting the character-rich patina of the embossed leather within depicting, among other Incan symbols, Supay - the Incan god of death and guide to the afterlife. With it's striking depictions of Incan mythology, intricate hand-tooled and embossed saddle-grade leather and a custom, hand-made frame cut from solid black walnut this truly one-of-a-kind art piece is sure to make a BOLD impression in any space it inhabits and is absolutely arresting from any angle. Ideal for designers and collectors alike searching for authentic folk-art from the Andes region this visually arresting piece can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Spanish Hacienda to Safari to Boho Chic and is the perfect addition to any collection. Just as Pazmino merged the design aesthetics of Scandinavian Modern and Spanish Hacienda so too we find this artwork merging the techniques, beliefs and aesthetics of both the Spanish and Native American design creating a uniquely original, honest outcome blending both the New and Old Worlds as no one else has ever done. Make it yours today before it's gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Width: 25 in / 63.5 cm Depth: 1 in / 2.54 cm Height: 17 in / 43.18 cm This artfully-crafted leather artwork...
