Eliane Diverly
Place de la Bastille - China Ink and Watercolor - 1930s

1930s

About the Item

Place de la Bastille is a really joyful original drawing on paper, realized around the first decades of XX century by the French artist Eliane Diverly (1914 - 2012). Titled and dated in blue ink by the artist on higher right corner of the back of the sheet. Original Title: Place de la Bastille, 14 Juillet Signed by the artist on lower right margin of the verso. This original sheet is double-sided: on the front, there is a China ink and watercolored drawing representing the official French parade drawn in the day of the back-holiday ( on the 14th July); on the back a very synthetic and rapid sketch of a male portrait with the typical sign of illustrator. A full mastery of the drawing technique and a mirrored color sensibility is evident here. In excellent condition, the higher-margin has the typical holes of the sketch-drawing books! The perfect artwork to awaken our ability to marvel and to party the day of French back-holiday! Éliane Diverly (1914 - 2012) was a French painter, portraitist, designer, and watercolorist. From a family of perfumers, she grew up in Grasse after spending her first years in Paris. Encouraged by her family, she attended the Grande Chaumière classes in Paris where she later settled. She made her first exhibitions in Cannes and Nice. He owes her work for advertising, fashion magazines and especially for the perfume world she has come from. She was a member of the Drawing and Water Painting Trade Shows, the National Museum of Fine Arts and the French Artists.Éliane Diverly was invited to present a retrospective of her work at the Independence Hall in 1999. She received numerous decorations during her exhibitions.

The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...
