About the Item
Four precisely configured and stacked circles form a contemplative pyramid at the foot of a square neutral ground. The areas between the shapes in this minimalist still life acrylic on plexiglass are filled with cream and maroon. Cantine's work is a poetic and intellectual exploration of a pictorial problem, color as structure which has infinite variations. They are effective installed individually or in groupings which highlight the effect of the shifts in color variation.
His paintings may take up to two years to complete. This work is currently unframed and exhibited on a designed ledge that accompanies the painting. The work may also be shipped framed upon request for an additional cost.
Cantine may be referred to as a post-minimalist, a term coined by Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971 to describe work with a minimalist tendency but that uses modest materials and aims towards a pure formalist aesthetic. David Cantine is a senior Canadian painter who has been exploring the still life for many years. Cantine was born in Jackson, Michigan (1939) and studied at the University of Iowa (BFA, MA) before moving to Alberta and working as a professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta (1965 – 96). His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Alberta, FAB Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art among others and is represented in numerous private and public collections.

- Zen Garden - bright, floral, impasto, abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvasBy Adam CohenLocated in Bloomfield, ONA floral motif in shades of pink, blue, green and lemon is used in an all over pattern by artist Adam Cohen in this delightfully bright painting. Cohen intersects the language of Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. The artist is known for his applications of thick impasto, applied in layers that he cuts through and moves while the pigments are wet. Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. He was one of the first artists to use Photoshop, which helped launch his career as an illustrator. After many successful years as an illustrator he returned to his first love...Category
