About the Item
Abstract artist Fiona Ackerman continues to be inspired by the staggering beauty of the natural world. In this lush, colourful botanical-themed composition the genus of the plant family ficus is featured. The Vancouver-based artist’s work explores colour, texture and pattern using graffiti, stencils and brushwork. This composition in a square format has layered organic shapes in a rich combination of deep greens, blues, purples, black, gray and white. One in a series.
“I realized that my botanical paintings were not really about nature but about my relationship to nature, my curiosity. My experience of nature as an outsider. About my hunger to understand nature. To feel at home in nature. My desire to love it and want to protect it rather than fear it.” Fiona Ackerman
Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman studied painting at Concordia University and completed a BFA at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She has held more than 20 solo exhibitions internationally. Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, video and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working with other musicians. She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC.

Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman studied paintings at Concordia University and completing a BFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC and exhibits her work internationally (Canada, Europe, USA, UK and Asia). Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, video projections and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working collaboratively with other musicians. Rooted in abstraction, I want to push my work in divergent directions, to surprise myself, and keep the possibilities for my painting wide open. Working in series, I develop a stylistic language specific to the mood or conceptual objectives I'm working on. Over the years, my work has seen many different stylistic evolutions. I see my arc of work much like that of an author. Each series is like a new book, different in tone, style, and story. But they are all part of a larger archive, and each a meaningful piece of the whole. - Ackerman

- Zen Garden - bright, floral, impasto, abstract expressionist, acrylic on canvasBy Adam CohenLocated in Bloomfield, ONA floral motif in shades of pink, blue, green and lemon is used in an all over pattern by artist Adam Cohen in this delightfully bright painting. The artist is known for his applications of thick impasto, applied in layers that he cuts through and moves while the pigments are wet. Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. He was one of the first artists to use Photoshop, which helped launch his career as an illustrator. After many successful years as an illustrator he returned to his first love...Category
