About the Item
A great strong-edge painting by Naohiko Inukai, No. 16 is part of a series the artist created in the mid 1960s. Many from this series were shown at Inukai's two solo shows at Stempfli Gallery in New York (1966 & 1968). This work is a rich, deep blue with narrow bands of color at the edges. Under good lighting the piece seems to glow from every angle. The work is signed, dated and titled "N. Inukai / 1966 / No.16" verso with an orientation arrow and "Up". The canvas measures 40" x 40", and 42 ½" x 42 ½" x 2" framed. The painting is framed in a stick frame hand-made by the artist.
Born in Okayama, Japan, Naohiko Inukai began his studies in art before coming to the United States in 1961, where he continued his art education at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Fine Arts, and the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture.
Inukai had two solo shows at Staempfli Gallery in New York, and was in many group exhibitions. His work may be found in many public and private collections in the United States and Japan. He taught art at Dartmouth College, Rhode Island School of Design, and Silvermine College of Art. From 1971-1972 he was a visiting critic at Cornell University, and from 1970-1971 he was a visiting artist at Dartmouth College. Inukai returned to Japan in the early 1980s, where he still resides.
