Naohiko Inukai
Untitled Red with Floating Dots painting by Naohiko Inukai

1964

About the Item

The rich red background of Naohiko Inukai's painting seems to glow under good lighting, with the floating dots adding a touch of whimsy to this minimalist work. The painting measures 40" x 40" and has a stick frame made by the artist. It is signed "N. Inukai" in the center of the bottom edge recto. Born in Okayama, Japan, Naohiko Inukai began his studies in art before coming to the United States in 1961, where he continued his art education at the Art Students League, the National Academy of Fine Arts, and the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. Inukai had two solo shows at Staempfli Gallery in New York. His work may be found in many public and private collections in the United States and Japan. He taught art at Dartmouth College, Rhode Island School of Design, and Silvermine College of Art. From 1971-1972 he was a visiting critic at Cornell University, and from 1970-1971 he was a visiting artist at Dartmouth College. Inukai returned to Japan in the early 1980s, where he still resides.

  • Over Isfahan by Fred Martin
    By Fred Martin
    Located in Hudson, NY
In the summer of 1970, I had been using acrylic for four years and had yet to find a way to develop color like a composer might orchestrate a symphony from a piano score. (The symphonic was then my visual ideal.) After the 106th acrylic of “majestic” size, I got real about scale—smaller—and switched to colored sticks of soft pastel so I could hold a rainbow in my hand. I kept on with the streaming lines of the big acrylic paintings, but I filled the spaces between with the soft pastels. –Fred Martin...
