In this recent work, by using the medium of mixed media on paper, Bhaskaran produces a softer, more ethereal feeling and his choice of yellowy orange and form of the cat juxtaposed against the black form of the jar, leads to a strong, playful yet elegant composition. Modern and Contemporary Artwork from India is now International in its collecting base. Leading artist’s such as R B Bhaskaran have always operated on a global platform. R B Bhaskaran ( 1942 - ) Paintings by leading Indian artist R B Bhaskaran, often large-scale and vibrant, use a stripped-down imagery that celebrates form, colour and ground. Only the best artists make a success from such simplicity. They capture our imagination and draw us into the work. These paintings allow us to explore an intangibility of thoughts, feelings, and fleeting private moments. Bhaskaran’s paintings are great artworks and great art often teaches us something about ourselves. Just like his contemporary, Howard Hodgkin, Bhaskaran’s paintings are distinctive. The brushstrokes and limited palette of strong colours point us straight to the artist and the spontaneity of his forms. Whilst his images may appear to be simple in their choice of objects and shapes they are anything but, which is why they hold our attention and draw us in. Each work, peppered with mark-making, lines, dots, and colour spots, creates paths that expand the narratives the paintings offer. We see plants, trees and animals, pots and vases, people and cats. Lots and lots of images of a cat, which in Bhaskaran’s hands becomes a timeless form that mirrors and confronts us, human-like, long-limbed, independent and commanding attention. It is primarily through the anthropomorphic image of the cat that Bhaskaran has chosen to explore his painting, his life as an artist and the world he inhabits. Ultimately these are great paintings to live with. They have a weight to them, a quality that comes from a great painter who is an acknowledged master of his craft and a leading proponent of the Modern and Contemporary Indian Art movement. R B Bhaskaran trained at The Government College of Arts and Crafts, in what was then Madras, today Chennai in India. He obtained his Masters in the UK and from 1970-80 expanded his practice at The Smithsonian in the USA. Bhaskaran has held prestigious positions within the Art World in India including as Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi in Delhi between 2002-2007. His work is held in major Public and Private Collections worldwide and he exhibited widely. Bhaskaran continues to live and work in Chennai, South India. Please contact us for more information.

  • Surrealist Large Royal College of Art LGBTQ+ Female Artist Horse Pink Blue
    By Isabel Rock
    Located in Norfolk, GB
Isabel Rock is a creator of contemporary fairy tales. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, her work is an explosion of strange occurrences while a surreal narrative takes the audience on a journey into the imagination. In October 2023 Isabel won the Evelyn Williams Drawing Award at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. Known as the UK’s most prestigious annual open exhibition for drawing; part of the prize is a solo show at Hastings Contemporary, scheduled for 2024. Whilst Isabel always has a tale to tell for each of her images, you may or may not choose to go on the journey with her or you may indeed have a different story, one of your own that jumps off the page at you, that that you decide to follow. Artwork Details: Horse of Hope, 122x152cm, Collaged woodblock print, acrylic ink on Somerset satin paper, 2023 Artwork Provenance: from the Artist Studio photo credits, Isabel working, black and white shots, James Brown In Isabel's own words: Horse of Hope The world had become a sad grey place, mud, empty plains with bleak, loveless sky as far as the eye could see. It seemed that all was lost of the old world. Until one day a whisper began on the breeze, so quiet that you could hardly hear it. But it grew stronger and stronger until the trembled with the sound. 'The horse of hope is coming, the horse of hope is coming!' The horse of hope had arrived, its dainty hooves tapping along the way. Where there had been nothing but emptiness the horse trod and from its feet sprung new life and hope. The world became a lush carpet under its footsteps. Up sprang greenery, pushing its tendrils to the sky. Blue irises reached out their twisted delicate petals welcoming the new life in. Strong, dark foliage grew and grew, and with this creatures began to return from their hiding places. Out from rocks and stones they came, for there was hope once again and the world buzzed with new life. *Please note we are happy to ship this work rolled in an art tube.
