Brighter Days

About the Item

This enigmatic painting is part of one of the most recent body of works by Petrov. His more typical palette of purples and blues is here abandoned for a subdued composition that uses only black, white, and gray. In this work Petrov strays from his abstract composition to wonder into a more figurative realm. There is a clear reference to an architectural space, with the grandiosity of a cathedral or an ancient Roman building like the Pantheon in Rome. The tiny undefined figures walking trough it enhance the perception of monumentality. The insertion of a light accent of orange and pink color in the otherwise colorless composition, creates a wonderful effect of internal luminosity, like some of the latest works by Rembrandt and the darkest paintings by symbolist French painter Odilon Redon. Andrei Petrov is an American Artist of Russian origins. His paintings are the expression of his lifelong struggle to retain memories of his childhood and life. He writes: as a child I was involved in an accident that affected my memory and compelled me to paint. Ever since, I have been trying to reclaim what I lost through my work. These paintings probe the distortion, incompleteness and rare moments of clarity in the shadows of memory. Each piece portrays the intrinsic struggle and selective inclusion or exclusion of details in the process of recollection. At times, sharpness occurs in the rear of the picture plane while the out of focus, obscured areas, exist in a larger scale toward the foreground and make reference to the inscrutable nature of long and short term memory."

Gian Berto Vanni's "Dance of Shiva" is a 68 x 36-inch figurative versus abstract oil painting on canvas. The painting has a simple gallery display frame in natural wood with a black reveal. It represents Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. The figure of Shiva slowly fades into an abstraction. The outcome is a powerful composition between a fiery warrior and a magic tree with an explosive bark. The beautiful interplay between different shades of brown adds a unique austerity and elegance to the artwork. The figure is an homage to the Dancing Shiva...
