About the Item

Édouard Gelhay was born on June 13, 1856 in Braine (Aisne). His father was a shoemaker.
He was trained by Alexandre Cabanel, William Bouguereau, Adolphe Goupil and Tony Robert-Fleury.
Gelhay painted portraits and landscapes. Both in oil and pastel, in the typical impressionist style.
From 1879 he exhibited at the Salon of French Artists. He won a 3rd Class medal in 1886 and two bronze medals at the 1889 and 1900 World Exhibitions.
After founding an association of Friends of the Arts in 1909, he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor. This was after organizing two French exhibitions of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts in Havana (in 1907 and 1908).
Gelhay tried to do the same in Mexico City and contributed to the spread of French art in the Spanish American world.
He died in Paris on February 10, 1939.
