Evening in Sussex
A young woman stands at an open gate as the sheep are brought in for the night.
A beautiful oil painting with a rich luminous quality.
Original oil on canvas. Dimensions 36" x 24". Comes unframed.
Signed in the lower left corner. Notes and label verso.
A few minor scuff marks. Very good condition. Relined canvas.
Ernest Walbourn was a Victorian landscape painter, specializing in cottage and farm scenes. These paintings were mostly set around Essex. He exhibited works at the Royal Academy, at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, and at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
Walbourn's wife, Eva, was a proficient landscape painter and features in many of his paintings. Works by Walbourn can be found at the Bolton Art Gallery, the Kirklees Museum, and Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry.
