Baroque English Portrait of boy and his dog

1680-1730

About the Item

Late 17th/early 18th century portrait of a boy. This portrait is in the manner of Sir Godfrey Kneller, however it lacks a signature and documentation. It would not look out of place in an English country house. The Portrait is of a young English boy wearing a powdered wig with one hand on the head of a dog who gazes at the viewer. The portrait comes with its original frame, the frame is in need of restoration, it is missing some carved elements and has several repairs. The portrait itself is in good condition but the canvas needs to be re-stretched as the antique wooden oval stretcher may have shrunk over time making the canvas appear warped in areas, as is typical with unrestored paintings of this period. Our estimated date of production is between 1680 and 1720 based on the boy's attire.
