Debbie Miller
"After Dinner Mint" Small still life, cupcake, white frosting, cherry on green

2019

About the Item

"After Dinner Mint" Oil on Panel, 6 x 6 inches. Painting of Chocolate Cupcake with White Frosting and Red Cherry on Top on a Green Background with White Dots. Framed in Silver ( 11 x 11 Inches Framed Size). There are 7 additional cupcake paintings available in this series which work well as a group. Beautifully painted in a luscious style reminiscent of Wayne Thiebaud's much more costly works, this series of individual or multiple cupcakes has both a Pop Art and traditional sensibility. At one point Miller set herself the fanciful goal of painting a cupcake a day and these charming paintings are as sophisticated, inventive, and accomplished as works of much higher value. They stand completely on their own or perfectly complement each when installed as a series. Some are on painted on canvas which require no framing, others are on panels which are sold framed in silver. Sale price includes frame cost where appropriate. Debbie (Gonville) Miller received her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 1988. A Native Rhode Islander, she grew up in a home that encouraged creativity and being outside in nature as much as possible. Her evolution into an artist was inevitable. Since graduating from RISD, she has worked as a freelance artist, decorative painter, teacher and master artist at an international folk art company. In 2006 she made the transition back to her first love, oil painting, bringing to her art strong composition and a colorful illustrative style. Miller has had numerous exhibitions throughout New England and her paintings are in many collections in the United States, Canada, England, Germany and Norway.

  • Apples and Glass, super real, illustionistic, colorful contemporary still life
    By Douglas Newton
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil paint on canvas Doug Newton’s hyper-real paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Mr. Newton resides in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...
