Georges Braque
Frontispiece, from La Nuit, La Faim (The Night, The Hunger), 1960

1960

About the Item

Georges Braque Frontispiece, from La Nuit, La Faim (The Night, The Hunger), 1960 is an abstract work which takes inspiration from a poem by Georges Riebmont-Dessaignes. Georges Riebmont-Dessaignes was a French writer primarily associated with the Dada movement. This work in particular serves as the frontispiece for a set of his published poems. Braque is known for frequently collaborating with poets and writers. In many cases, the artist was given freedom to interpret the texts as he wished, often times producing distinct prints which capture an abstract interpretation of the written work. In this work, various geometric forms are layered on top of one another as if in a collage. The shapes resemble cutouts and are colored in varying shades of blue, black and white. The dynamic centered is balanced by the calm beige tones in the background. Looking closer, some shapes within center may resemble birds in flight. The blocks of color also meld in together seamlessly, creating a balanced composition. However some parts of the center are colored in a sparse blue, generating an interesting texture. Braque creates a fascinating composition that also reveals his unique artistic language. Created in 1960, this color lithograph is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d’Oise, 1882 – Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right; numbered from the edition of 25 in Roman numerals in pencil in the lower left; published by Adrien Maeght, Paris, printed by Mourlot, Paris Catalogue Raisonné: Georges Braque Frontispiece from The Night, The Hunger (La Nuit, La Faim), 1960 is fully documented and referenced in the below catalogue raisonnès and texts (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that will accompany the sale of the work. 1. • Composition sur fond jaune
    By Fernand Léger

utting a new spin on one of his favorite subjects, Léger here depicts tree trunks and logs as objects in space rather than related to the ground. The gnarled branches form an abstract still-life composition, twisting and turning in unanticipated directions. The earthy browns, greens, and yellows contrast with the bold black outlines. The logs appear as though arranged on a platter, presented to the viewer for contemplation. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the tiny box...
