Edited by legendary underground filmmaker, Warhol collaborator Jonas Mekas. Further background: Even before his screen-prints of Campbell’s soup cans and Marilyn Monroe made him an international art star in the early 1960s, Andy Warhol was a successful, highly paid commercial illustrator in New York. With his portfolio of samples Andy quickly received illustration work from all of the major fashion magazines, including Glamour, Vogue, and Harpers Bazaar. Andy’s “blotted line” technique and his superb draftsmanship caught the eyes of numerous art directors. Throughout the 1950s he was prolific in illustrating fashion ads, books, record albums and many other promotional items. He also worked to create innovative advertisements for I.Miller, a popular shoe company. The advertising world of the 1950s groomed him well for his venture into the art world of the 60s. • John Baldessari Necessary Facts poster 1999 (vintage John Baldessari)
    By John Baldessari
    Located in NEW YORK, NY
John Baldessari at Marian Goodman Gallery New York, 1999: Rare vintage original 1990s exhibition poster to commensurate the opening of 'John Baldessari, The Tetrad Series', 1999 at Marian Goodman Gallery.' This piece features a grid of four images and, in traditional Baldessari style, presents photography, text and a nod to painting. Vintage poster. Dimensions: 18 x 18 inches (9 x 9 inches folded closed). Good overall condition; fold-lines as originally issued; minor signs of handling & light wear to folds. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. John Baldessari: It is hard to characterize John Baldessari's varied practice—which includes photomontage, artist’s books, prints, paintings, film, performance, and installation—except through his approach of good-humored irreverence. Baldessari is commonly associated with Conceptual or Minimalist art, though he has called this characterization “a little bit boring.” His two-dimensional works often incorporate found images, composed in layers or presented as distinct pieces with an element of surprise, like a brightly colored geometric shape in the place of a face or a starkly printed sardonic caption. Baldessari has demonstrated a lasting interest in language and semantics, articulating these concerns through the use of puns or the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated images and words, as in his 1978 work Blasted Allegories. His self-referencing photomontages and use of text have been sources of inspiration for countless artists, including Cindy Sherman, David Salle, and Barbara Kruger. Baldessari identifies his own artistic lineage, saying, "I would prefer to go to the source with Duchamp rather than credit Warhol as an influence." Related Categories: John Baldessari prints.
