Georges Braque
Lithograph from Le tir à l'arc (The Archery)

1960

About the Item

This abstract Georges Braque Le tir à l'arc (The Archery), 1960 toys with repetitive motifs that vary ever so slightly. Four white, rectangular figures arranged in a square formation appear as geometrically altered birds. Their small wings flutter out and they fly amidst a soft blue background consisting of perpendicular strokes that relay a textured effect. Grey, shadowlike figures rest immediately behind each white form, providing a striking yet subtle color contrast. The positioning of shadows below Braque's abstract birds makes it look like we are peering from the sky down upon a flock of birds. We look from the position of the sun that shines down on the white birds. Based on the title Le tir à l'arc (The Archery), the viewer may surmise that these abstract figures are indeed birds flitting through the sky, serving as targets for the archers nearby. Created in 1960, this original color lithograph is from the illustrated book Le tir à l'arc. This work is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 70 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Louis Broder, Paris and printed on chine colle. Marc Chagall L'oranger (The Orange Tree), 1975 delicately illustrates an outing between two young lovers as the idle in an orchard. Though their faces are muted, detailed in a lighter color grey so that their facial features aren’t so pronounced, the young man stares in profile, gazing down at his partner with admiration in his eye. His visible left hand gingerly touches her arm, a subtle gesture of intimacy. The woman in the image faces the viewer directly, soft features gazing ahead of her as she leans into her partner. Clutched in her hands is a wire basket filled with the surrounding flora, fauna, and fruit. A small, yellow goat...
