Gaetano Pompa
The Golden Hind - Etching by Gaetano Pompa - 1970s

1970s

About the Item

The Golden Hind is an artwork realized by Gaetano Pompa (1933, Forenza- 1998) in 1970s. The artwork is  an aquatint and etching on paper. Hand signed on the left corner. Edition of 75, numbered, 26.  Good condition. Gaetano Pompa  was born in 1933 in Forenza. After the war, he moved with his family to Rome. From 1958 to 1961, he lived in Munich, where he also carried out an intense artistic activity as a musician. When he returned to Italy, he spent most of his life in Rome. He disappeared in Orbetello in 1998. In all his artworks, the artist tried to revive the poetry of the past through his airy and distant landscapes and his ambiguous and sometimes paradoxical figures, creating a series of suggestions that overlap with the insistence of memories, mixing past and present with a visionary enchanting faculty.

  • Royal Palm With Turkish Design
    By David Smith-Harrison
    Located in Palm Springs, CA
Signed, titled artist proof. Edition of 135. Royal Palm with Turkish Design maintains the interplay between the twodimensionality of the architectural rendering and the modeled line work of the palm. The addition of a subtle fade of sky-like blue in the upper left-hand corner works with the atmospheric marks to further emphasize the illusion of volume in the palm. Conversely, by bordering the upper half of the print with a pattern from an early Ottoman brocade, Smith-Harrison reminds us that we are not to take a representation of three dimensions as realism. The small medallion in the lower center of the print, although it also is taken from an Ottoman brocade, doubles as an architectural element. The shape resembles the glyph-like mark used to represent a palm tree in plan view drawings. The ornate, curvilinear large medallion is the third of the Ottoman elements. Placed in the lower left of the print, both the shape and the etching in deep reds and blues create an allusion to a polychrome roundel. Both the shape and the placement provide balance to the colonnade and the angular rendering in the center of the right side of the print. David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. In 1983 he traveled in Europe and studied at the Art and Design Faculty of South Glamorgan Institute in Cardiff, Wales. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey. Smith-Harrison’s imagery is distinctive for its meticulous and studied execution and rigorous, demanding craftsmanship. The results are generally rich in subtle articulations and poetic spirit. His work is located in private collection in Japan, Taiwan, Republic of China, Spain and the United States.
