Her primary medium of choice is printmaking, exquisite etchings whose protagonists jump off the page to tell their stories. Like all good narratives that lucidly roll from one tale to the other the artist works in series. Be it her Kissa Goi or her new Vachik stories, each work comprises of many parts, all fitting together as one large work, or, equally as pleasing, as individual works that may or may not speak to each other in any combination of pattern. Sonal lives and works in Lucknow, in India, the City famous for its tradition of Ghazal poetry. In past times the poems were displayed in Diwan's (illustrated books) a calligrapher and artist would be commissioned to illustrate the poems. Sonal references these traditions and we can see traces of this in her contemporary images. Ghazal's delight and employ elements of playfulness, anecdote and surprise. They take their audience on a bitter-sweet journey and Sonal invites us to do the same. The artist explains that in the evenings the women gather on the roof terraces of her town to tell the tales that are passed from the older generations to the younger women. These are stories that primarily revolve around the woman and their everyday role in a patriarchal society. These tales become mixed with the contemporary, both local and global events that effect the lives of the women. At first glance there is an anecdotal quality to the visual narratives but look a little longer and you will be rewarded by layer upon layer of meaning. Through the clever use of text and images of objects which may at first appear to be dislocated, each part of the image pulls together the narrative, expanding it into many different levels. In Sonal's own words, 'This work is very close to my heart, a lot of emotions are attached to this work. Some such feelings that awakened for the first time and they were priceless. I have lived that time, felt it very closely, whatever happened to me at that time, I have tried my best to make it work. Kajal has a very important role, when there are children and grandmothers complete it, it is said that by applying Kajal in the eyes of the children, the eyes become bigger. Cascading Waterfall, is an etching and aquatint on copper plate, printed on Arches paper. Its image dimensions are 14 3/4 by 23 1/2 inches. It is included in the collection of the Museum of Art, MoMA NYC. Commissioned by the print club of Cleveland, Ohio. April Gornik (born 1953, Cleveland, Ohio) is an American artist who paints American landscapes. Her realist yet dreamlike paintings and drawings embody oppositions and speak to America's historically conflicted relationship with nature. While she doesn't categorize herself as an environmental artist, she is a passionate supporter of environmental causes and has said, "I have no problem with people reading an ecological message into my work." Biography Gornik received in 1976 her B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (now called NSCAD University), and while attending the school she met her future husband, painter Eric Fischl. Art dealer Ed Thorp hosted her first solo exhibition in 1981, after having caught sight of her paintings while viewing Fischl's work. She is influenced by the feminist consciousness-raising of the late 20th century and, in speaking about female artists who have worked in the shadows of better known male artists, including Elaine de Kooning and Lee Krasner, she has said, "It's a problem. Women artists still receive lower prices for their art and remain less shown than their male counterparts." In 2014, FigureGround Press published the monograph April Gornik: Drawings, an extensive look at charcoal drawings done since the mid 1980s. The book includes essays by Steve Martin and Archie Rand, an interview with Lawrence Weschler, and a digital download of a piano and cello composition by composer Bruce Wolosoff, played by Wolosoff and Sara Sant'Ambrogio of the Eroica Trio. Gornik has remained committed to helping her community and making a difference, Gornik and her husband invested in 26 acres of land in which they donated in 2017 to the town of North Haven to preserve land. She also adds her funds to the Southampton Animal Shelter as well as being involved with the Eastville Historical Society. Collections Various permanent art collections include Gornik's work, including: Smithsonian American Art Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Hood Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Nasher Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, and many others. Signed, titled artist proof. Edition of 135. Royal Palm with Turkish Design maintains the interplay between the twodimensionality of the architectural rendering and the modeled line work of the palm. The addition of a subtle fade of sky-like blue in the upper left-hand corner works with the atmospheric marks to further emphasize the illusion of volume in the palm. Conversely, by bordering the upper half of the print with a pattern from an early Ottoman brocade, Smith-Harrison reminds us that we are not to take a representation of three dimensions as realism. The small medallion in the lower center of the print, although it also is taken from an Ottoman brocade, doubles as an architectural element. The shape resembles the glyph-like mark used to represent a palm tree in plan view drawings. The ornate, curvilinear large medallion is the third of the Ottoman elements. Placed in the lower left of the print, both the shape and the etching in deep reds and blues create an allusion to a polychrome roundel. Both the shape and the placement provide balance to the colonnade and the angular rendering in the center of the right side of the print. David Smith-Harrison studied at Utah State University and served as studio assistant to Adrian Van Stuchelen and Moishe Smith. In 1983 he traveled in Europe and studied at the Art and Design Faculty of South Glamorgan Institute in Cardiff, Wales. Before leaving for Europe, Smith-Harrison began an intense professional association as a studio assistant to artist Trevor Southey. Smith-Harrison’s imagery is distinctive for its meticulous and studied execution and rigorous, demanding craftsmanship. The results are generally rich in subtle articulations and poetic spirit.
