"Makaha" (Metal) Sculpture- mid century modern, modernism, monochrome

2023

About the Item

"Makaha (Metal)" is a fun modernist freestanding sculpture that brings bold statement to wherever it is placed. Made from .25" thick powder coated mild steel, it is vibrant and durable and can be used both inside and outside (powder coated is weather resistant). The color is a retro teal (Even though it appears almost bright blue in the bright sun photos). Artist Scott Troxel says The piece is part of my popular "Steel Pops" Sculpture Series which are inspired by my love for simple bold colors and a minimalists sensibility. This piece has a modern feel yet also brings a retro vibe which results in an unexpected and contemplative feel to any area which it is placed. Similar to mid century modern furniture and graphic design, I strive to produce work that feels very modern yet has a retro futurists nostalgic nod to the past. I named them "Steel Pops" because they are fun, bright and feel much bigger than they are due to the bold color palettes and retro inspired shapes. Piece Size- 12" x 13" x .25" thick steel, Base Size- 8" x 16" x .25 thick steel

  • "Cryptic Voyage" outdoor sculpture
    Located in Glen Ellen, CA
This surreal suspended sculpture in painted steel hangs from a wire to enliven any outdoor space. The large white mouth in the center blows bright pink birds into the air while a white figure seen in profile is jumping off a diving board on the other side. Quite a happy cacophony of forms in this most playful kinetic sculpture! (White clouds optional, but make for a delightful photo!) Jeff Glode Wise makes wildly exuberant sculptures. He utilizes such diverse materials as steel, wood, stone, glass, concrete, bronze, and gold -- whichever is the most appropriate for the aesthetic and functional purposes at hand. He then transforms these materials through various techniques and crafts honed for years through his practice of jewelry making: welding, carving, casting, meticulous fitting, plating, etc. Art and the making of objects have defined Jeff Wise...

The colorful top section is counterbalanced by a brake drum and concrete cone that moves inside of a steel cage over an embedded base made of cast iron antique man-hole covers. It catches even the slightest breeze for near-constant movement! Please watch the video to see the incredible wind-powered kinetic in action. Jeff Glode...

  • Chesapeake Blue
    By Jeremy Thomas
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
"These inflated objects are grown more than fabricated. Through the process of inflation, the application of the air to the geometric construction defines form at the moment of inflation." It is the pragmatic that draws Thomas. Asked about his influences he asserts that his primary influences do not come from the realm of art but rather from everyday living. “I don’t eat, sleep, and breathe art,” he comments. His discovery of metal-working arose in a similar, practical way. Thomas had been sculpting with stone and asked someone to show him how to forge his own chisel. This was the start of his exploration of forging techniques and after a time he gave up working with stone to work with metal. One of the key aspects of blacksmithing that intrigued Thomas was fact that it isn’t instantly gratifying, and it poses questions that aren’t easily solved. He interned with Tom Joyce...
