For the exhibition Veiled Hoods and Stains, Cal Lane combines delicate lacework and discarded steel car and truck hoods to create two series of related works. Traditionally used as a symbol of purity to adorn clerical robes, or to evoke fragility and femininity, lace both reveals and conceals. For her Veiled Hoods (2014), Lane uses a plasma cutter as her needle and thread to cut elegant lace patterns in the steel hoods, connecting the history of labour-intensive craft to the mass production of the contemporary automotive industry. Lane's painstaking process, which transforms readymade objects into captivating sculptures, gives the ornate material strength and durability. Whereas hoods are often designed to cover, hide, or protect, the elaborate motifs on Lane's structures expose the skeletons hidden underneath the appearance of stability. The intricate lacework that Lane carves into the industrial material uncovers the layers of contradictions inherent to her choice of materials. If hoods can sometimes be threatening, such as the ones worn by those who wish to conceal their identity, Lane's simultaneously veil and expose to disclose the fragility of the steel structure and the strength of the decorative pattern.
Automobile hoods that are regarded as no longer useful are regularly discarded and end up in scrap yards, left to decay with other unwanted debris. The vulnerability of the material is revealed in corrosion, as a few rain drops may cause the steel to rust. For her Veiled Hood Stains (2014), the meticulous hand craftsmanship associated with lace-making is replaced by an imprint of rust, the often undesirable reaction of steel in the presence of water and oxygen. Lane places the seemingly resistant structures on sheets of canvas for several weeks to allow the hoods to leave their imprints behind, staining the clean material with their reddish-brown residue. It is only upon closer inspection that viewers might notice that what at first appears to be delicate fabric embellished with a decorative pattern is created out of the wear and debris of a steel automobile part that has lost its original purpose. The passage of time–the manufactured object's past life and Lane's labour intensive process of cutting the steel to create lace patterns–remains inscribed on the surfaces of the sheets as the hoods deteriorate. In Lane's work, matter out of place is arranged in a precise order, what is meant to hide also unveils, and a fragile material is rendered as resilient as a steel automobile part.

Cal Lane
Sculptor and metal artist Cal Lane has garnered international acclaim for transforming industrial steel I-beams, shovels, car hoods and dumpsters into lacy, decorative works of art. While her sculptures can be interpreted as a challenge to gender stereotypes — the transformation of hard, “masculine” steel into “feminine” lace filigree — Lane suggests her art reaches beyond that.
“I see steel as a metaphor for confrontation, a thing that represents the walls put up by the society I was born into,” she has said. “Steel feels like the perfect material to carve into, to create the contrasts and conflicts that I myself struggle with.”
Born in 1968 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Lane trained as a welder and was a hairdresser in her mother’s salon on Vancouver Island before she turned to build a career in art. She earned her BFA at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and attended the State University of New York, where she specialized in sculpture and earned her MFA.
As an artist, Lane became interested in exploring gender roles through Conceptual art. Although critics have compared her work to that of American minimalist sculptor Richard Serra, known for his spiral steel sculptures, Lane cuts into steel objects, creating ornate patterns that reference femininity in her figurative and abstract sculptures. This is demonstrated in works such as Pantie (2017), Veiled Hood #2 (2014) and Grace Invasion (2011).
In addition to her sculptures, Lane produced a series of wallpaper drawings in 2017, such as True Barring, Mind Your Bubble and Poking Holes in the Ocean, depicting military submarines on cloud patterns. The drawings explore the perception of submarines as phallic war objects in contrast to their innocent depictions in popular culture.
Lane’s sculptures and illustrations have been exhibited in numerous international shows throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom. Her works are also highly sought by collectors of Contemporary and abstract art.

In an age where the re-assessment of our modes of production and consumption has become a main constituent of our identity, his work serves as a potent reminder of this position’s precarity. One piece resembling a cluster of branches, for example, balances in a tenuous fashion, relying on the equal distribution of weight among all its parts to stay upright. In another work, the boughs extend upwards from a base so small it threatens to tip over. As opposed to the romantic and idealized conceptions of a nature as realized in the compositions of the Group of Seven, Dark, by working in the industrial material of hot forged steel, acknowledges the imprint of the human hand on our surroundings.
