Emilio Greco; At the age of thirteen he began working as an apprentice stonemason in the construction company of a local architect who mainly dealt with the restoration and construction of civic monuments.
In 1934 he obtained an external certificate at the Academy of Palermo, then undertook military service in the Royal Army. He took part in some colonial battles (Africa, Albania) but passively followed the events of the Second World War in Rome. In 1947 he resided and worked together with other famous artists at Villa Massimo.
From 1948 to 1952 he was assistant to Quirino Ruggeri thanks to a competition for qualifications, Liceo di via Ripetta to then move on to the chair of sculpture at the Carrara Academy in 1952 thanks also to the undisputed successes obtained. In this period he had the painter Gualtiero Passani as a pupil with whom he maintained a collaborative relationship.
He achieved great popularity with the Pinocchio and the Fairy monument (1956) for the town of Collodi. His cycle of the Great Bathers and his portraits of young women are poetic. By him are the Monument to Pope John XXIII in San Pietro and the Doors of the
Cathedral of Orvieto (1970). After a triumphal exhibition tour, from 1971 the myth of Greco was created, culminating with the establishment of the open-air museum of Hakone called "Garden of Greco".
He continued teaching for several years in Naples (1955-67) and then again in the capital from 1967 to 1975, where he met the eighteen-year-old Kurdish artist Aziz Fuad; after which he first held the professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later worked in Salzburg on the interest of Oskar Kokoschka.
He lived for a time in Iran, where he was appreciated by the country's senior management, who wanted to use him for some of his works.
The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow dedicated a room of sculptures and graphic works to him. In Catania, the museum dedicated to him offered a collection of numerous lithographs and etchings.
He was an assiduous traveler and is currently considered one of the greatest sculptors of the twentieth century.

Emilio Greco
Emilio Greco, (born Oct. 11, 1913, Catania, Italy—died April 5, 1995, Rome), Italian sculptor of bronze and marble figurative works, primarily female nudes and portraits. At the age of 13, Greco was apprenticed to a stonemason, and he later studied at the Academy of Art in Palermo. Though he began exhibiting in Rome in 1943, he was not well-established until after World War II. His first solo exhibition was held in 1946, and in 1948 he became a teaching assistant at the Artistic Secondary School in Rome. His subject matter varied little throughout his career. In their refined, elongated forms and assertive balance, his sculpted figures reflect the Mannerist tradition in Italian art (e.g., Bather No. 2, 1956–57). The expressive, luminous surface treatment in some pieces, however, strikes a clear parallel with the work of Giacomo Manzù and Marino Marini. He designed one of the bronze doors of the Cathedral at Orvieto (1961–64) and the monument to Pope John XXIII in Saint Peter’s (1965–67). In 1974 a Greco Garden, dedicated to his works, was opened at the Open Air Museum, Hakone, Japan. In 1991 a group of Greco’s works, donated by the artist to the city of Orvieto, was placed on permanent exposition at the Palazzo Soliano. Source: "Emilio Greco," Encyclopedia Britannica, 2017
